When Is the Best Time of Year to Replace a Fence?
Late winter and early spring are the practical sweet spot — before growth, before storm season repeats, and before summer lead times stretch.
There is no closed season for fencing, but timing does affect ease, cost and how quickly you can get a date in the diary.
Autumn and winter
Ground is softer for digging, borders are dormant so plants suffer less, and contractors have more availability. The trade-offs are shorter working days, slower concrete curing and the occasional washout week when ground is waterlogged. If you know a fence is failing, doing it before the January and February gales is money well spent.
Spring
The best all-round window. Ground is workable, plants are only just moving, and a new fence is in place before you want to be sitting in the garden. This is also when demand climbs, so book earlier than you think.
Summer
Long days and dry conditions are pleasant to work in, but baked clay is hard digging, borders are in full growth and lead times are at their longest. If you want a fence up for a specific event, allow real contingency.
After a storm
Every contractor's phone rings at once. If your fence is down but the posts are sound, a temporary brace keeps things safe while a proper repair is scheduled — we will tell you honestly whether yours can wait a fortnight.

Not into frozen ground. We reschedule rather than compromise the bases.
Will replacing a fence damage my borders?
There is some disruption within about a metre of the line. Winter work, when perennials are dormant, minimises it.
Are prices cheaper in winter?
Materials cost the same year-round, but availability is better and jobs are easier to schedule quickly.
How far ahead should I book?
For spring and summer work, several weeks. Emergency repairs are handled separately and faster.
