Height alone is a blunt instrument. A tall, smooth-faced closeboard run with no useful footholds and a narrow top rail does more to slow an opportunist than a taller fence with horizontal rails that hand-and-foot up like a ladder.

Where clients want a visible deterrent rather than a fortress look, we detail anti-climb toppings — angled brackets, trellis that collapses under weight rather than supporting it, or a slim capping rail with no horizontal grip — instead of razor wire, which is rarely appropriate or permitted on a domestic or light-commercial boundary.

Sightlines and site layout

A fence that hides an intruder from the road or from your own windows can work against you. We walk the boundary from the perspective of someone trying to get in unseen, not just from the garden looking out, and we'll say so if a solid screen is the wrong call next to an entrance, bin store or gate.

For site compounds and commercial yards this extends to gate positioning, lighting handover to your electrician, and keeping a clear line of sight from any manned gatehouse or office window to the vulnerable corners of the perimeter.

Mesh and steel palisade options

For yards, compounds and larger commercial boundaries we specify galvanised steel palisade or heavy-gauge mesh systems on concrete-set posts — a different build entirely from garden timber fencing, with bolted panels, anti-tamper fixings on the accessible face, and options for weld-mesh gates matched to the same line.

Domestic security briefs more often mix a robust timber or composite screen with a mesh or railing return where visibility needs to be kept for parking or a front garden — we'll usually recommend that mix rather than one material for the whole boundary.

Compliance and limitations

Height limits under permitted development still apply to a security boundary — front gardens are typically capped lower than side and rear boundaries, and anything close to a highway needs sightlines kept clear for road users. We check this before quoting rather than after installing.

We're honest about what a fence can and can't do: it slows and deters, it doesn't guarantee against a determined intruder, and it works best alongside lighting, locks and — where relevant — your insurer's own requirements, which we're happy to build the spec around if you send them over.

What we don't do

We don't fit razor wire, electrified fencing or anything requiring specialist licensing on domestic or standard commercial jobs — those need a specialist security contractor. We also won't quote a boundary that would breach your local authority's height rules just because it's requested; we'll tell you what's actually permitted and build the strongest compliant option instead.
