Water ingress at the bottom rail
The bottom rail of a gate sits closest to splash-back from the ground and holds moisture longer than any other part of the frame, making it the most common place for rot to start on an otherwise sound gate.
Where a repair addresses bottom-rail rot, raising ground clearance slightly or improving drainage underneath is worth doing at the same time to slow the same failure recurring.
Scribing a gravel board to uneven ground
Ground level rarely runs perfectly straight between two posts, so a gravel board cut square often leaves a gap under one end and digs into the ground at the other unless it's scribed to follow the actual contour.
Scribing means holding the board in position, marking the ground profile onto its face, and cutting along that line so the board's bottom edge follows the undulation rather than an assumed flat datum.
On concrete gravel boards this isn't possible after casting, so uneven ground either needs the board bedded on a shaped mortar bed or a timber board used instead where the ground profile is particularly irregular.
Prioritising repairs ahead of the windier months
A post or panel that's borderline rather than fully failed is more likely to come down completely once autumn and winter storms start, so repairs identified in summer are worth scheduling before the exposed season rather than left until something actually blows over.
This is particularly relevant on exposed boundaries or end bays that have already shown signs of movement, since those are the sections most likely to fail first under wind load.
When a failed post means replacing the gate too
A hanging post that's rotted at ground level usually needs full replacement rather than repair, and because the gate is bolted directly to that post, the gate itself often has to come off and be reassessed for damage during the process even if the gate was previously sound.
This is worth explaining clearly to a client who's expecting a simple post swap, since the gate's own hinges and fixings may need attention at the same time.
Pool and hot tub enclosure fencing logic
While UK regulations don't mandate pool fencing the way some other countries do, insurers and safety guidance still recommend a self-closing, self-latching gate and a barrier without easy footholds around any domestic pool or hot tub, particularly where young children have access to the garden.
The latch or lock should sit high enough that a small child can't reach it even standing at the gate, and the gate should swing away from the pool area rather than toward it so it can't be propped open accidentally.
A solid or closely-spaced barrier at least 1.2m high with no horizontal rails low enough to climb is the general standard worth applying even without a specific legal requirement to do so.
Prevailing wind direction and driven rain exposure
In much of southern England the prevailing wind and driven rain come predominantly from the south-west, so a south-west-facing fence face typically weathers, silvers and needs re-coating faster than the opposite face of the same run.
This uneven exposure is worth explaining to clients who are puzzled that one side of a boundary looks noticeably more weathered than the other despite being installed on the same day from the same materials.
Where a client wants a more even appearance over time, orienting board overlap so the leading edge faces the prevailing weather sheds rain more effectively than the reverse arrangement.
Checking post bases for corrosion under heavy load
A steel post base carrying the weight of a dense acoustic panel is under more sustained load than the same post supporting an open fence, so any corrosion at the base has a greater effect on the post's ability to stay upright.
An annual check at ground level, where moisture and debris tend to collect against the post, catches early corrosion before it compromises a post that's carrying more weight than a standard fence post would.
Fixing a fence or gate to a neighbour's wall
Attaching a new fence panel, gate post or trellis to a wall that belongs solely to a neighbour is a trespass unless they've agreed to it, even where the fixing itself is small and reversible like a single bracket.
Where a wall is genuinely shared or in unclear ownership, written agreement before drilling avoids disputes later, particularly since removing a fixing can leave visible damage the wall owner didn't consent to.
The safer default on an unclear boundary is a free-standing post set just inside the client's own land, rather than relying on an existing structure whose ownership hasn't been confirmed.
Distance from the noise source
Sound naturally loses energy over distance, so a barrier placed closer to the source rather than close to the receiver tends to perform better for a given height, because it intercepts the sound sooner.
On a boundary where the source is a busy road just beyond the fence line, this favours getting the barrier as close to that boundary as ownership and access allow, rather than setting it back into the garden.
Disposing of broken-out concrete footings
Broken-out concrete from an old post footing is inert waste and can generally go to a construction and demolition waste facility, but it still needs removing from site rather than left buried or piled at the back of a garden.
On a job with several posts being reset, the volume of broken concrete adds up quickly, and planning where it's going before the repair starts avoids it sitting as a hazard or an eyesore on site for longer than necessary.
Wildlife gaps for hedgehog movement
A small gap of around 130mm square cut into the base of a solid fence panel, sometimes called a hedgehog highway, lets hedgehogs move between connected gardens without needing to dig under or go around a continuous boundary.
This is increasingly requested by clients aware of declining hedgehog populations and is straightforward to incorporate into a new close-boarded panel, ideally agreed with the neighbouring property so the gaps line up on both sides of the boundary.
The gap doesn't compromise the fence's structural performance if it's cut cleanly within a single board rather than across a post or rail.
Sourcing reclaimed or discontinued timber to match an existing run
Older properties sometimes have a fence built from timber sections, profiles or panel sizes no longer in standard production, which makes an exact match difficult without sourcing reclaimed stock or having a bespoke run cut.
Reclaimed timber needs the same checks as new stock — treatment condition, rot, and structural soundness — before reuse, since visually matching timber that's structurally compromised isn't a genuine repair.
Where matching isn't practical, agreeing a deliberate, tidy transition point with the client (a change of panel style at a natural break, like a corner post) usually looks better than trying and failing to blend two slightly different materials seamlessly.
