Timber species and on-site workability
Workability describes how easily a timber can be sawn, planed, nailed and screwed without splitting, tearing or blunting tools excessively, and it varies considerably between species independent of durability or strength.
Straight-grained, moderate-density softwoods like redwood pine are generally easier to work on site than dense hardwoods or highly figured timber with interlocked or wavy grain, which can tear out during cutting or planing.
A timber chosen purely for durability or appearance without considering workability can significantly slow on-site fitting, particularly where a lot of site cutting and drilling is needed rather than factory-machined components.
Checking and shakes as timber dries
Checking refers to small surface splits that open along the grain as the outer face of a timber dries and shrinks faster than the still-damp core, and it's a normal, largely cosmetic feature of drying softwood rather than a structural fault.
Shakes are a related but distinct defect present in the standing tree or log itself, such as a separation between growth rings, and can run deeper into a section than surface checking.
A moderate amount of surface checking on a post or rail doesn't usually compromise strength, but a shake running the length of a load-bearing post is worth inspecting before use, since it can concentrate stress along that plane.
Letterplates fitted into gate doors
A letterplate is occasionally fitted into a solid garden or side gate door serving as a secondary entrance, and its position needs to clear internal ledges, braces or a deadlock case before cutting the opening.
Weather sealing around a letterplate in an exterior gate door matters more than on a covered porch door, since the opening faces the weather directly with no canopy above it.
Driveway gate sizing and swing arc
A driveway gate needs its swing arc checked against the car actually parked behind it, not just the opening width, since a gate that clears a small hatchback can still clash with a larger estate or a roof box.
Outward-opening gates onto a public footway are generally avoided because they can obstruct pedestrians and pushchairs, which is why most residential driveway gates are hung to open inward onto the drive itself.
Sliding gates are a practical alternative on a short or sloping driveway where there isn't room for a swing arc, though they need a level track run and enough side clearance to slide fully open.
Ventilation requirements under a deck
A low-level deck with boxed-in sides and no airflow underneath traps moisture against the joists and the underside of the boards, which is one of the most common causes of premature timber rot on an otherwise well-built deck.
Leaving gaps in the skirting, or fitting purpose-made ventilation grilles, allows air to circulate beneath the structure and lets the timber dry out between wet periods rather than staying permanently damp.
Decks built very close to ground level with minimal void beneath them are particularly at risk and sometimes need a raised design specifically to allow enough clearance for airflow.
Kiln-dried versus green timber movement
Green, or unseasoned, timber still holds a significant amount of moisture from milling and will keep shrinking as it dries out in situ, which can open gaps, twist boards or loosen fixings within the first year.
Kiln-dried timber has already been brought down to a stable moisture content under controlled heat, so it moves far less once installed, though it costs more to produce and can be less forgiving if left stacked in wet conditions on site.
Feather-edge and featheredge-style fencing is particularly sensitive to this, since green boards fitted tight can shrink into visible gaps by the following summer even though they looked fully overlapped on the day of installation.
Preventing warp in a gate leaf during storage before fitting
A gate leaf left leaning against a wall or stacked flat on damp ground before fitting can pick up an uneven moisture gradient across its faces, encouraging warp before it's even hung.
Storing a gate flat, supported evenly and off the ground, with both faces exposed to similar conditions, reduces the risk of a leaf arriving on site already slightly twisted.
Laminated engineered timber posts
Laminated posts are built up from several thinner timber sections glued face to face under pressure, which can even out natural defects like knots across the section and produce a straighter, more dimensionally stable post than a single sawn piece of the same size.
Because the lamination process distributes any given defect across a smaller proportion of the overall section, a laminated post is generally less likely to fail suddenly at a single knot or grain irregularity than solid sawn timber.
The adhesive bond line itself becomes a potential weak point if it's exposed to sustained moisture without an appropriate exterior-rated glue, so laminated posts intended for outdoor use need adhesives specifically rated for damp exposure rather than interior-grade bonding.
Offsetting the string line to protect it during digging
A string line pulled exactly along the intended post centre line gets in the way of digging and is easily knocked or buried in spoil, so many installers set it slightly to one side and measure across to it rather than digging directly beneath it.
A fixed offset distance, checked and noted once at the start, lets every post position be measured consistently from the same reference without needing the string itself to survive undisturbed through a full day of digging.
Re-checking the offset periodically through the day catches the line if it's been nudged, since a small unnoticed shift partway through a run throws every subsequent post slightly off true.
Headroom and ground clearance on a rising site
A gate hung across ground that rises from one side to the other needs enough clearance built into its swing to clear the highest point of that rise without the bottom rail dragging as it opens.
We measure ground level across the full arc of swing, not just at the gate posts, before setting hinge height on a sloping or uneven site.
Framed, ledged and braced gate frames
A framed, ledged and braced gate combines a proper mortice-and-tenon perimeter frame with ledges and a diagonal brace behind the boarding, giving more racking resistance than a simple ledged-and-braced gate that has no frame at all.
This construction costs more to build than a basic ledged gate but holds its shape for longer, which matters on a wider or more exposed opening.
Windbreak netting as an interim exposure measure
On a newly exposed plot, such as after a neighbouring hedge or building is removed, temporary windbreak netting fixed to the existing fence can reduce load on the structure while a longer-term solution like replanting or upgrading the fence itself is arranged.
This is a genuinely useful stop-gap rather than a permanent fix, since netting left up long-term degrades in UV and adds its own wind resistance once it starts to fray and catch more air than when new.
It buys time to plan a proper specification change rather than leaving a suddenly-exposed fence to fail before a permanent upgrade can be arranged.
Diagnosing a latch that only sticks in damp weather
A latch or gate that closes fine in dry weather but sticks or binds after rain is very often timber swelling with moisture rather than a hardware fault, and this points to a finish or ventilation issue rather than the latch mechanism itself.
Confirming the pattern is weather-related before adjusting or replacing hardware avoids fixing a symptom that will return with the next wet spell.
Post-repair adjustment after settling
A newly concreted or reset gate post can settle slightly in the weeks after installation, particularly in looser or made-up ground, which can throw a freshly hung gate's swing or latch alignment out again.
A follow-up adjustment to hinges or the latch keep after the post has settled is normal practice rather than a sign the original repair was done incorrectly.
