Aluminium gates give the clean look of a metal gate without the weight of steel or the upkeep of timber. They are a popular choice for modern front drives and side paths, and they come in solid, slatted and barred designs in colours such as grey and black. We supply and fit aluminium driveway gates and pedestrian gates, hung on existing brick piers or on new posts.
The photos on this page show styles available, so you can see the kinds of designs on offer before we talk about your opening.
Aluminium, steel or timber?
Each material has its place. Aluminium is light and does not rust, so it is easy on hinges and posts and needs little more than a wash. Steel is heavier and stronger for the same section, which suits wide or security-led openings, and it relies on galvanising and powder coating to keep rust out. Timber has the natural look many older houses suit, but it needs treating and can move with the weather.
- Aluminium: light, rust-free, low upkeep, modern designs
- Steel: heavier and stronger, galvanised and powder coated
- Timber: traditional look, needs periodic treatment
Driveway gates
Aluminium driveway gates are usually a matching pair or a single wide leaf. Because they are lighter than steel, they put less strain on the posts and are easier to open by hand, which is useful on a busy drive. The width, height, which way they open and how they meet in the middle are all agreed before anything is ordered.
Pedestrian and side gates
A matching aluminium pedestrian gate on the front path, or a taller side gate between the house and the boundary, ties the front together. Side gates can take a lock so the back garden stays secure, and the latch is chosen so it works from the side you need.
Hanging on brick piers or posts
Aluminium gates can be hung on existing brick piers if the brickwork is sound and plumb. We check the piers first, because a gate is only as straight as what it hangs from; a cracked or leaning pier needs repairing or replacing with a post. Where there are no piers, gates are hung on metal posts set in concrete.
Choosing a design and colour
Aluminium gates come in solid infill for privacy, horizontal slats for a modern front, and vertical bars where you want to keep a view of the house. Grey and black are the most asked-for colours because they sit well with brick, render and most front doors. If the gate sits next to existing railings or a fence, we look at heights and lines so the new gate lines up with what is already there.
How an aluminium gate job runs
Send us photos and rough measurements, we send a written estimate, then we visit to confirm before work starts. We cover London and Hertfordshire. The estimate names the design, size, colour and how the gates will be hung.
