Some driveways, particularly on corner plots or busier roads, are subject to a required visibility splay — an area kept clear of tall obstructions so drivers can see pedestrians and other vehicles safely.
A fence built to the usual permitted development height can still breach a specific visibility splay condition attached to the property, especially where one was imposed when the driveway was originally created.
Checking historic planning conditions for the property, or asking the council's highways team, is worth doing before fencing close to any vehicle crossing.
Run-off from a neighbour's hardstanding
A neighbouring driveway, patio or other hard surface that slopes toward a shared boundary sends its rainfall run-off directly onto the adjoining plot rather than allowing it to soak away locally, and that concentrated flow is often worse than ordinary rainfall on open ground.
A fence sitting in the path of that run-off can see its base saturated far more often than the rest of the same run, shortening the life of posts and gravel boards at that point specifically.
Where this is a known issue, a shallow channel or permeable strip along the fence line intercepts the flow before it reaches the timber, rather than leaving the fence itself to act as the only barrier.
Gate hardware for a deck-level opening
A gate set into a deck balustrade, for example at the top of external steps or beside a pool, benefits from a self-closing hinge and childproof latch in the same way a pool or driveway gate would, particularly where there's a fall risk beyond it.
Hardware exposed to full weather on an open deck needs the same corrosion-resistant fixings as an exterior fence gate, since a deck gate often sees more direct rain and UV exposure than a gate tucked against a house wall.
The gate frame needs bracing consistent with the balustrade posts either side of it, since a lightweight infill gate hung between two structural posts is only as safe as its own resistance to being pushed or leant on.
Waney-edge boards
Waney-edge boards, sometimes called weatherboard, retain the natural, uneven outer edge of the log they were cut from, including some bark-line curvature, rather than being sawn to a straight parallel edge.
They're generally cheaper than feather-edge because more of the log's cross-section can be used, but the irregular edge means overlaps vary along the length of each board and can't be set as precisely.
The rustic appearance is often the main reason they're chosen over feather-edge, particularly for informal or rural boundary fencing where a uniform finish isn't the priority.
