A change in level along a run — a step up to a raised patio, or a drop to a lower side passage — needs the fence height measured consistently from the ground it's actually protecting, not from an average across the whole run.

A timber gate that's greying or losing its finish benefits from a light sand back to bare or sound timber before re-treating, since coating over a failed or flaking existing finish traps moisture underneath rather than sealing it out.
This is worth doing every few years depending on exposure, well before the timber itself starts to soften or split.
Gravel-board clearance over uneven ground
A gravel board sitting flush with the soil on one section of a run can end up buried a couple of inches by the time the ground rises further along an uneven boundary, trapping moisture against timber that was specified to sit clear of the soil.
Stepping the board height slightly at each post, rather than running one continuous level line, keeps a consistent clearance above grade along the whole run.
Concrete gravel boards tolerate this ground contact better than timber ones, which is one reason they're specified as standard on plots with visibly uneven levels.
Hit-and-miss fencing for windy plots
Hit-and-miss fencing alternates boards on either side of the rails so each gap on one face is covered by a board on the other, giving privacy from both sides while leaving narrow gaps through the panel itself.
Those gaps let a proportion of wind pass through rather than loading the whole panel face, which is why it's a common recommendation on exposed boundaries where a solid closeboard run would need heavier posts and shorter bays.
It uses more timber than a single-skin boarded fence for the same run length, so it's priced accordingly, but the reduced wind load can offset that in post and repair costs over time.

A property that's had underpinning or subsidence repair work sometimes has ground disturbance extending into the garden near the boundary, which can affect where a new fence line can safely be dug without disturbing settled ground.

Capped versus uncapped composite boards
Capped composite boards have a thin outer polymer shell bonded over the wood-polymer core, giving better resistance to moisture ingress, staining and UV fade than an uncapped board with the core material exposed directly to weather.
Uncapped composite is generally cheaper and machines more like traditional timber, since the surface can be cut, drilled or profiled without exposing a different material underneath, but it's more prone to surface fading and moisture absorption over time.
A capped board's protective shell is only on the finished faces, so a cut end on site exposes the uncapped core underneath, which some manufacturers address with an end-cap trim while others leave it exposed.
Drop bolts and ground sockets
A drop bolt fixed to the bottom rail of a leaf drops into a ground socket to hold that leaf still while the other leaf is used for daily access, and a socket that's silted up or out of alignment is a common reason a drop bolt stops locating properly.

Automation compatibility checks and specialist referral

Post caps and their role beyond weatherproofing
A post cap sheds water off the end grain of a timber post or the open top of a hollow steel post, but on a security run it also removes a foothold or handhold that an open post top would otherwise offer.
Domed or sloped caps are harder to grip than a flat cap, which is worth specifying on posts near a gate or corner where climbing is most likely to be attempted.
Boards splitting along the line of the fixing nail
A board that splits at a nail has usually been fixed too close to its edge or fixed with the nail driven into an existing check in the grain, and the split then runs further with each wet-dry cycle until the board finally lets go.

Composite versus timber
Composite decking and fencing boards trade a higher upfront cost for lower ongoing maintenance — no annual staining or oiling, and better resistance to rot in permanently damp or shaded spots where timber struggles.
The trade-off is that composite doesn't weather the way timber does; it stays close to its original colour rather than silvering or taking on the character some clients want, and off-cuts and end sections need cutting and capping carefully to stop moisture getting into the core.
For a boundary fence that's mostly out of sight, timber with a reapplied treatment every few years is often the more economical long-term choice; for a heavily-used deck, composite's lower maintenance burden usually wins out.
Extending or matching an existing secure line
Where a security upgrade only covers part of a boundary, the new section is matched to the existing line's height and topping detail so the boundary reads as one continuous deterrent rather than a strong section next to an obviously weaker one.
On a shared commercial perimeter this often means checking a neighbouring occupier's existing spec before finalising the new section.
Repairing a spot damaged repeatedly by a dog
A dog that digs at the base of a fence or chews at exposed board edges tends to concentrate damage at one recurring spot rather than spreading it along the whole run, which makes a localised repair — a buried mesh skirt, a metal kick-plate — more effective than a general fence upgrade.
