The 2m permitted development height limit
Under permitted development rights, a new or replacement fence, wall or gate can generally reach up to 2 metres in height without planning permission, away from a road used by vehicles.
That height is measured from the natural ground level on the lower side where there's a change in level, which can make a fence look and function as taller than 2m when viewed from the raised side.
These are general rights and can be restricted or removed on individual properties, so checking with the local planning authority before installing anything close to the limit is sensible.
Welded mesh panels compared with twin-wire double-mesh panels
A single-skin welded mesh panel is cost-effective and widely used, but a twin-wire double-mesh panel sandwiches two offset mesh layers so that the apertures never align, making the panel far harder to get a foothold or cutting tool through cleanly.

On sites where timber panel failure from wind loading is a recurring problem despite heavier posts and shorter bays, a powder-coated steel or aluminium panel system offers a genuinely different approach, since the material doesn't flex, crack or delaminate the way a timber panel eventually does under repeated wind load.
These systems cost more than timber upfront and have a different aesthetic that not every client wants, but on a genuinely difficult exposed boundary they remove the recurring panel-replacement cycle entirely.
It's worth presenting as an option specifically where a client has already replaced timber panels on the same exposed run more than once, rather than as a default first suggestion.
Land Registry title plans and their limits
Land Registry title plans are based on Ordnance Survey mapping and are deliberately described as showing 'general boundaries' rather than the precise legal line, typically accurate to a scale where a boundary can shift by up to half a metre without contradicting the plan.
That means a title plan is rarely enough on its own to settle exactly where a fence should sit to the centimetre, particularly on older plots where boundaries have drifted gradually over decades of replacement.
A determined boundary application can fix a precise legal line where a dispute genuinely needs it, but for most routine fence replacements, agreeing the line by eye with reference to the existing structure and the general boundary plan is the practical approach.
Spigot connections between post and base
A spigot system lets a post be lifted clear of its ground socket for replacement without breaking out the surrounding concrete, which is useful where a vehicle strike or corrosion has damaged one post in an otherwise sound run.
The spigot itself needs to be a snug fit rather than a loose sleeve, because play at that joint under lateral load is what eventually works a socket wider and lets the post rock.

On a job where fencing follows landscaping, paving or groundworks by another trade, confirming final levels and boundary positions with that other trade before digging starts avoids fence posts being set to a level that then changes once the remaining groundwork is finished.
Where fencing is scheduled before paving, agreeing which side of the post line the paving will finish against prevents a post ending up embedded in what should have been a clear paving joint.
Simple sequencing conversations at the outset, rather than each trade working to its own assumptions, avoid the more expensive alternative of one trade's finished work being disturbed by the next.

They tend to be more flexible than an equivalent timber section of the same size, which can be an advantage in absorbing impact but a disadvantage where rigidity is needed to resist sustained wind load without visible sway.
Their thermal expansion behaviour is closer to other polymer products than to timber, meaning fixings and adjoining materials need similar allowance for movement as with composite boards rather than being treated as a timber-equivalent product.
What a repair sign-off covers
Once a repair is complete we check the repaired section moves and sits correctly against the rest of the run, not just that the immediate damage is fixed, since a post reset slightly out of line can put uneven strain on the panels either side.
