Reinforcing a hinge post weakened by gate movement
A gate hinge post takes repeated leverage every time the gate swings, which loosens its footing faster than a plain fence post nearby carrying no such load, and it's a common early failure point on a boundary that includes a gate.
Reinforcing usually means a larger post section, a deeper footing, or bracing back into the adjoining fence run, rather than simply resetting the same post size that already proved inadequate for the load.
Matching gate infill to the adjoining fence
A gate with a different infill pattern to the fence either side is a visible weak point as well as an inconsistency, because an intruder targets the section that looks different from the rest of the run.
Matching pale spacing, mesh aperture or panel style across the gate and fence keeps the whole perimeter to one standard rather than leaving the gate as the obvious soft spot.
Mesh aperture and 358 prison mesh
358 mesh — so called for its 3mm wire, 5mm x 76mm aperture — is specified where cutting or climbing resistance matters, because the small aperture won't take a boot toe or bolt-croppers the way a standard weld mesh will.
Standard weld mesh apertures run larger and cheaper for general perimeter use; the tighter 358 pattern is reserved for compounds, substations and sites where the threat model justifies the extra cost per metre.
The general boundaries rule explained
Land Registry title plans in England and Wales normally show only the 'general boundary' of a property, meaning the line on the plan is indicative rather than a precise, surveyed measurement to the centimetre.
That's why a title plan alone rarely settles an argument about whether a fence sits a few inches one way or the other.
For most domestic fencing this doesn't matter, but where a dispute is brewing it's worth knowing the plan wasn't drawn to resolve exactly that kind of question.
Panel versus closeboard repair economics
A panel fence is repaired panel by panel, so a single damaged section is a straightforward swap, whereas a closeboard fence is repaired board by board, which suits a partial repair better but takes longer per linear metre.
Where storm damage has hit a wide section, a panel system is often quicker to put right; where only a handful of boards are affected, closeboard repair wastes far less sound material.
Arris rail mortice joint wear
A traditional arris-rail panel fence uses a triangular-section rail slotted into a mortice cut through the post, and repeated wind loading can gradually enlarge that mortice, letting the rail rock and eventually loosen the whole panel.
A mortice cut slightly oversized from the start, or one that's been enlarged by rot before a replacement rail is fitted, is a common weak point that arris-rail brackets were largely developed to bypass.
Galvanised metal arris-rail brackets, fixed to the face of the post rather than through it, avoid weakening the post with a mortice at all and are now the more common detail on new panel fencing.
When a failed post means replacing the gate too
A hanging post that's rotted at ground level usually needs full replacement rather than repair, and because the gate is bolted directly to that post, the gate itself often has to come off and be reassessed for damage during the process even if the gate was previously sound.
This is worth explaining clearly to a client who's expecting a simple post swap, since the gate's own hinges and fixings may need attention at the same time.
Tree proximity and root-safe post positions
Digging a post hole through a tree's root protection area can damage roots enough to destabilise the tree or trigger a preservation order breach, so post positions are offset or moved to hand-dug, narrower holes where a root is found.
A boundary running close to a protected tree is checked against its root spread before any layout is finalised, rather than adjusted only once digging hits a problem.
Tamper-proof fixings and shear-nut bolts
Standard hex-head bolts can be undone with a spanner from outside a compound, so security runs use shear-nut or one-way bolts that snap the head off once torqued, leaving nothing for a tool to grip.
These are fitted at pale-to-rail junctions and on any panel that could otherwise be unbolted from outside the line, and they cost little more than standard fixings for a meaningful gain in tamper resistance.
Setting corner posts before intermediate posts
Corner and end posts are normally set first and their positions checked and finalised before any intermediate post along the run, since every other post's position is measured relative to those fixed points.
Setting intermediate posts first and corners last risks a corner ending up slightly off the true line established by the string, which then means either accepting a visible kink or redoing intermediate posts to correct it.
This sequence matters even more on a run with two changes of direction, where getting one corner wrong compounds the error along the whole of the next leg.
Urban heat and timber movement
Fencing against south-facing brick walls, paved courtyards or close to parked vehicles in dense urban plots experiences more extreme daily temperature swings than the same timber in an open garden, due to heat absorbed and re-radiated by hard surfaces.
That repeated expansion and contraction can open joints in panels and loosen fixings faster than in a more moderate microclimate, particularly on darker-stained timber that absorbs more heat.
Stainless or coated fixings and slightly looser panel-to-post tolerances both help absorb this movement without splitting timber over successive summers.
How we measure and quote a job
A proper quote starts with a site visit rather than a phone estimate — measuring the actual run length, checking ground conditions with a probe or short trial dig, and confirming access before any numbers go on paper.
That's the only reliable way to catch the things that change a price: buried obstructions, a slope that needs stepping, a shared boundary that needs the neighbour's agreement, or a gate opening that's slightly out of square.
A written quote following that visit should specify post spacing, post and panel material, base type and any extras like gravel boards or capping, so there's nothing to renegotiate once the job starts.
Assessing whether a removed panel's fixings are reusable
When a panel is lifted out to replace a post behind it, the panel's own clips, brackets or nails are sometimes still serviceable and can be reused, but corroded or bent fixings are worth replacing at the same time rather than refitting a panel with worn hardware.
This is a small extra check that avoids a repair looking complete on the day but failing again within a year because the original fixings, not just the post, were already close to the end of their life.
Dog day-care and kennels

Double-gated airlock entries, where an inner and outer gate can't be open at the same time, are a common feature at the perimeter to stop dogs escaping through a single opened gate.
Packing a hinge to correct drop
Where a gate has dropped only slightly and the frame itself is still square, packing out the top hinge or shimming the bottom one can correct the swing without remaking any joints.
This is a quick adjustment rather than a permanent fix if the underlying cause is a loose fixing, so we still check why the drop happened before packing alone is used as the solution.
Accelerated hardware corrosion in coastal locations
Salt-laden air near the coast accelerates corrosion of untreated or lightly galvanised gate hardware considerably faster than an inland site, which can shorten the working life of hinges, latches and fixings if they're not specified with this exposure in mind.
Stainless steel or heavily galvanised fixings are generally a better specification than standard galvanised or plated hardware for a gate sited close to the coast.
New-build plots and developer specification
New-build plots are frequently handed over with a minimal timber boundary treatment specified by the developer, sometimes with a defects-period clause that ties any alteration to the developer's own maintenance obligations for the first two years.
Ground on a recently-built plot is also often disturbed or re-graded rather than settled, so posts set too soon after landscaping can move as the ground consolidates over the following winter.
Estate-wide design codes on new developments frequently specify a single approved fence style and colour for the first several years of occupation, which is worth checking against the site's planning conditions before replacing anything.
Victorian terraces with rear alley access
Many Victorian and Edwardian terraces back onto a shared rear alley or 'twitten' rather than opening onto a private access road, and boundary fencing along that line is often a mix of ownership — some panels the householder's, some historically shared with the alley itself.
Alley gates onto these routes need to open inward or be set back, since a gate swinging out over a shared right of way can obstruct neighbours and bin collection.
Where the alley is council-adopted, replacing a boundary fence that fronts it can also need a look at any local byelaws on gate height and lockable access before ordering materials.
Sleeper thresholds beneath field and driveway gates
A timber or concrete sleeper set into the ground beneath a wide field or driveway gate gives the gate's bottom edge a firm, level reference to close against, preventing the bottom rail from dropping into soft or rutted ground over time.
This detail is particularly useful on unsurfaced openings where the ground either side of the gate sees regular vehicle or livestock traffic and would otherwise rut unevenly.
Screw pull-out values in timber
A screw's resistance to being pulled straight out of timber depends on thread depth, shank diameter and the density of the timber it's driven into, with denser hardwoods offering significantly higher pull-out resistance than softwoods for the same screw.
Coarse-thread screws designed for softwood construction generally have deeper, wider-spaced threads than fine-thread screws intended for hardwood or metal, since softwood's lower density needs more thread engagement to achieve comparable grip.
Pre-drilling a pilot hole reduces the risk of splitting dense or knotty timber but also slightly reduces ultimate pull-out resistance compared with a screw self-tapping fully into undrilled timber, which is a trade-off worth balancing against the specific timber and screw.
Corner plots and highway sightlines
A boundary fronting a road used by vehicles is limited to 1m under permitted development, but corner plots have a second constraint: the highway authority's visibility splay, which can require even lower boundary treatment near a junction so drivers can see pedestrians and oncoming traffic.
These splays are measured as a triangle from a set point back along both roads and are sometimes fixed by a planning condition on the original build rather than by the general permitted development rules.
A solid fence built to the letter of the 1m rule can still be a highway safety problem on a tight corner, so it's worth checking the local plan or asking planning before finalising height on a corner boundary.
