Combining a low concrete plinth wall with fencing above
A low block or concrete plinth wall under a fence panel raises the effective height, resists dig-under and impact better than a timber gravel board, and gives a clean, level starting line on sloped or uneven ground.
The plinth needs its own foundation independent of the fence posts above it, since settling of one shouldn't be allowed to drag the other out of line.
Boundary responsibilities under an agricultural tenancy
Where land is let under an agricultural tenancy, responsibility for boundary fencing can sit with the tenant rather than the landowner, depending on the specific tenancy agreement's terms.

Checking the tenancy agreement itself is the only reliable way to establish who's actually responsible for a specific boundary on let agricultural land.
Setting out a straight run with string lines
A straight fence line starts with two fixed end points and a string line pulled taut between them, usually run just above where the posts will sit rather than at ground level where it snags on grass or debris.
On a long run the string sags under its own weight, so an intermediate profile or peg is needed every few bays to keep the sight line true rather than trusting a single span.
Any post that's set even 10-15mm off that line becomes visible once panels go in, because the eye picks up a wander in a boundary far more readily than a small step in level.
Repositioning a post slightly off its original line
Where an original post position has proven to be a recurring failure point — sitting in a wet hollow, or close to a tree root that keeps disturbing it — repositioning it a short distance along the run can solve a problem that repeated resets in the same spot haven't.
This needs agreement on the boundary line first if the shift is more than a token amount, since moving a post changes where the fence physically sits relative to the boundary rather than just repairing it in place.
Fox digging and mesh skirts
Foxes commonly dig at the base of a fence line where the ground is soft, undermining a gravel board or creating a gap large enough to pass through underneath an otherwise intact fence.
A buried mesh skirt fitted along the base at repair time, angled outward below ground, is a more durable fix than repeatedly backfilling the same dug-out gap.
Garden doors set into a masonry wall
A garden door hung within a brick or block opening behaves differently to a gate hung between timber posts, since the fixings go into masonry rather than a post that can be dug out and replaced.
Frame fixings into old or soft mortar joints are a common failure point, and repairs often involve re-fixing into sound brick rather than simply tightening the same holes.
Concrete post reinforcement
Precast concrete fence posts are reinforced internally with steel rods or mesh running the post's length, which gives the otherwise brittle concrete the tensile strength to resist bending loads from wind pressure on the panels it holds.
The reinforcement needs adequate concrete cover on all sides to stop moisture reaching the steel and causing it to rust and expand, a process that can crack the post from the inside out over time, known as spalling.
A concrete post with reinforcement bar visible or rust-staining at the surface has usually already lost some of its cover and is worth replacing before the cracking spreads further along its length.
Why a night-time visual check adds value to a security survey
A daytime survey shows the fence's physical condition but not how it actually performs after dark, when most intrusion attempts happen, so a short evening visit to check lighting coverage, shadow lines and visibility from the street can reveal gaps a daytime walk-round misses entirely.
This isn't always practical for every job, but it's worth offering on a higher-value commercial site where lighting and fencing are both being reviewed together.
Recognising hinge wear before a gate fails

A listed building's curtilage can bring garden walls, railings and even historic fence posts within the scope of listed building consent, regardless of the general permitted development rules that would apply to an unlisted house next door.
Cast iron railings removed during wartime salvage are a common feature many period properties never had reinstated, and some conservation officers now encourage sympathetic replacement rather than modern panel fencing on street-facing boundaries.
Consent applications for listed curtilage work typically want a heritage-appropriate material and jointing method specified up front, so it's worth involving the conservation officer before, not after, a design is finalised.
Composite versus timber
Composite decking and fencing boards trade a higher upfront cost for lower ongoing maintenance — no annual staining or oiling, and better resistance to rot in permanently damp or shaded spots where timber struggles.
The trade-off is that composite doesn't weather the way timber does; it stays close to its original colour rather than silvering or taking on the character some clients want, and off-cuts and end sections need cutting and capping carefully to stop moisture getting into the core.
For a boundary fence that's mostly out of sight, timber with a reapplied treatment every few years is often the more economical long-term choice; for a heavily-used deck, composite's lower maintenance burden usually wins out.
Hedgerow removal and nesting-bird season
Removing or cutting back a hedge to install a new boundary fence is generally best avoided between March and August, the main bird nesting season, since disturbing an active nest is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act regardless of intent.
Some countryside and agricultural hedgerows are also protected under the Hedgerow Regulations, which can require notifying the local authority before removal even outside a garden setting.
A pre-work check of the hedge for active nests, and scheduling removal for autumn or winter where the timeline allows, avoids both the legal risk and the delay of having to stop mid-job.
Bolt-down versus concreted base plates
A bolt-down base plate suits hardstanding such as a concrete yard or car park, using resin or expansion anchors rather than digging a footing, which keeps the surface intact and the fence removable if the layout changes.
A concreted post gives a stiffer, more permanent fixing on soil or made-up ground, but it isn't an option where the surface can't be broken — the choice is driven by the ground, not by preference.
Post spacing on a run that doesn't divide evenly
Standard panels are usually 1.83m (6ft) wide, but very few boundary runs measure out as an exact multiple of that, so the layout has to absorb the remainder somewhere rather than pretend it isn't there.
The common approach is to split the shortfall across the two end bays so both are cut slightly narrower and roughly matched, rather than leaving one full-width bay and one very narrow offcut at a single end.
Where a fixed feature — a gate opening, a manhole, an existing post that must stay — sits partway along the run, setting out works outward from that fixed point in both directions rather than from one end only.
Access and material handling on site
Concrete, posts and panels are heavy, and a site with only a narrow side return or no vehicle access changes how a job is priced and sequenced — materials sometimes have to be carried through rather than dropped at the boundary.
On a commercial yard the opposite problem applies: keeping a working site operational around a delivery of steel palisade or mesh panels needs a delivery and storage plan agreed before the first post goes in.
Green belt and stock-proof boundaries
Plots backing onto green belt land, paddocks or working farmland often need a genuinely stock-proof boundary rather than a decorative garden fence, particularly where livestock graze the adjoining field.
Post-and-rail with stock netting, or a taller close-boarded run where privacy also matters, both do the job, but a standard panel fence with gaps at the base is routinely pushed through or under by sheep and larger dogs.
Any new boundary on green belt land should also be checked against local planning policy, since green belt designation adds another layer of restriction on top of the usual permitted development rules.
Offsetting the string line to protect it during digging
A string line pulled exactly along the intended post centre line gets in the way of digging and is easily knocked or buried in spoil, so many installers set it slightly to one side and measure across to it rather than digging directly beneath it.
A fixed offset distance, checked and noted once at the start, lets every post position be measured consistently from the same reference without needing the string itself to survive undisturbed through a full day of digging.
Re-checking the offset periodically through the day catches the line if it's been nudged, since a small unnoticed shift partway through a run throws every subsequent post slightly off true.
Preservative retention levels
Retention describes the quantity of preservative chemical actually held within the timber after treatment, usually expressed in kilograms per cubic metre, and is a more meaningful durability measure than the treatment process alone.
Higher retention is specified for higher-risk applications such as ground-contact posts than for above-ground rails, reflecting the greater and more sustained moisture exposure a buried timber faces.
Retention can only be verified by laboratory analysis of a sample core, so in practice specifiers rely on the treatment plant's use-class certification rather than visually inspecting the finished timber, since colour alone doesn't indicate how much preservative penetrated.
Boundary questions following inheritance or probate
Properties passing through inheritance sometimes bring boundary questions to light for the first time, particularly where an elderly relative had an informal understanding with neighbours that was never documented.
Executors and new owners are generally well advised to check the title plan and deeds carefully during this process rather than simply continuing an inherited informal arrangement without confirming it.
Where a boundary genuinely wasn't clear to the previous owner, this is a reasonable moment to check with the neighbour and consider formalising a written agreement.
Ground clearance over gravel or block paving
A gate hung with tight clearance over a lawn can start dragging once the surface underneath is changed to gravel or block paving, since both typically sit slightly higher than turf and compact unevenly over time.
We check finished ground level, not just the level at the time of the original hang, before setting clearance on a repair or re-hang.
Making a storm-damaged fence temporarily safe before full repair
Where a fence has failed suddenly — a fallen tree, a collapsed panel — and a full repair can't happen immediately, propping the affected section and taping off the area reduces the immediate risk to people or pets before proper repair work starts.
A temporary make-safe isn't a substitute for the repair itself, and a client should understand it's a stop-gap measure rather than something that resolves the underlying failure.
