Where timber wins outright
Anywhere you want to sit in a garden without being overlooked. Timber gives solid privacy at a sensible price, it is warm to look at, and it can be built to follow difficult ground closely. For rear and side boundaries it is very hard to beat.

Front boundaries, where you want the line defined without losing light or making the house feel shut in. Anywhere security is the driver. And anywhere a period property calls for railings, where timber simply looks wrong.

Finish is to metal what treatment is to timber
Metal fencing lives or dies by its finish. Galvanising and powder coating are what keep steel sound for decades, and a good finish properly applied needs very little from you afterwards beyond attention to any scratch that goes through to bare metal.
Cost is not a simple comparison
Metal is not automatically dearer. A simple bar railing across a front garden can compare favourably with a timber fence of the same length, while a fabricated pair of driveway gates is in a different bracket entirely. It depends on section, height and finish rather than on the material name.
