Getting Your Garden Ready for the Fencers
An hour of preparation the evening before saves real time on site, and time on site is what you are paying for.
Nobody expects you to prepare a building site. But a boundary you can actually get to, with the pots moved and the trampoline elsewhere, means the crew spends the day fencing instead of gardening.
This is the list we would send you if you asked what would help.
Clear the line of the fence
Around a metre of working space on your side of the boundary makes the difference. Posts need digging, boards need holding level, and old fencing has to come out before any of that.
- Move pots, planters, furniture and bins away from the run
- Cut back shrubs and climbers growing into the existing fence
- Lift anything valuable near the line, including delicate planting
- Take down anything of yours fixed to the old fence, such as lights or hooks
Plants you want to keep
Established climbers on an old fence rarely survive its removal intact, and it is much better to hear that beforehand. Where a plant genuinely matters, it can sometimes be untied and laid back for the day, or the run sequenced so it is exposed for as little time as possible. Just point it out on the day we quote.
Access, parking and waste
Materials arrive on a vehicle and the old fence leaves on one. Anything you can do about parking near the property genuinely shortens the day, and where the route to the garden goes through the house, a clear run and protected flooring helps.
- Keep a space near the property free if you can, especially on a permit street
- Clear the route from front to back, including a side return or hallway
- Say where the water supply and an outside tap are, if there is one
- Tell us about anything buried you know of, such as a cable to a shed or garden lighting
Pets, children and the neighbours
The boundary will be open at times during the day, so plan for the dog. And a quick word with next door before the work starts prevents most of the awkwardness that boundary work can create, particularly where the crew needs to reach over or stand on their side briefly.
On the day
You do not need to be there the whole time, though it helps if someone is around at the start to confirm the line and the height. Anything else, ring us on 07885907880 and we will sort it.

How much space do fencers need to work?
Roughly a metre of clear working space along your side of the boundary is ideal, enough to dig, hold boards level and remove the old fence.
Will my plants survive new fencing?
Established climbers on the old fence often do not, so point out anything that matters when we quote and we will plan around it where we can.
Do I need to be at home during the work?
Not throughout. It helps if someone is there at the start to confirm the line and the height, then we can carry on.
Should I tell my neighbour before fence work starts?
Yes, it is worth a quick word. Boundary work often needs brief access over the line, and forewarning prevents most misunderstandings.
What happens to the old fence and waste?
We remove it and dispose of it properly as part of the job, unless something different has been agreed and written on the quote.
Do you need water or electricity from the house?
Not usually, though it is handy to know where an outside tap is. We will always ask rather than assume.
