Tangential shrinkage and cupping
Wood shrinks more in the direction that runs tangentially to the growth rings than along the grain's length, and boards cut close to the outer edge of a log (flat-sawn) show this most, curling into a dish shape known as cupping as they dry.
A board with growth rings running roughly parallel to its face is far more prone to cupping than one cut through the centre of the log, where rings run closer to perpendicular to the face.
Fixing boards with two nails or screws per bearer rather than one resists cupping better, since a single central fixing lets the edges lift and curl relatively freely.
Coordinating fencing work with other trades on a shared site
On a job where fencing follows landscaping, paving or groundworks by another trade, confirming final levels and boundary positions with that other trade before digging starts avoids fence posts being set to a level that then changes once the remaining groundwork is finished.
Where fencing is scheduled before paving, agreeing which side of the post line the paving will finish against prevents a post ending up embedded in what should have been a clear paving joint.
Simple sequencing conversations at the outset, rather than each trade working to its own assumptions, avoid the more expensive alternative of one trade's finished work being disturbed by the next.
Hardwood options for gates
Gates take more racking stress than a fixed fence panel, opening and closing on a single edge, which is why hardwoods such as oak or iroko are often specified for gates even where the adjoining fence is softwood.
Oak's natural durability means it can be left untreated and will weather to silver-grey, but it also moves seasonally and can stain surrounding masonry with tannin run-off in wet weather, which is worth flagging before it's fitted next to a pale render or paving.
Hardwood gate frames are usually built with mortice-and-tenon joints rather than the simple nailed or bracketed joints acceptable on a softwood panel, since the joint has to resist years of racking without loosening.
Hedgerows as a boundary feature
Some countryside and village hedgerows are protected under the Hedgerow Regulations 1997, which can restrict removing an 'important' hedgerow even where it marks a private boundary.
This mainly affects longer, older hedges in rural or semi-rural locations rather than typical suburban garden hedges, but the distinction isn't always obvious without checking.
Where a fence is planned to replace or run alongside a hedge, it's worth confirming with the council whether the hedgerow itself has any protected status before removal work begins.
Gate frame timber sizes by width
A gate frame's timber section needs to increase with the width of the opening, since a wider gate has more leverage acting on the hinge side and more unsupported span across the middle before diagonal bracing is added.
A narrow single pedestrian gate can often use a modest frame section, while a wide double-leaf driveway gate needs substantially heavier stiles and rails plus a diagonal brace to stop it dropping or racking out of square at the latch side.
Bracing should run from the top of the hinge side down to the bottom of the latch side, in the direction that actually resists the gate's tendency to sag, not simply corner to corner for appearance.
Re-securing wire fencing where staples have popped
Fencing wire under tension gradually works staples out of a timber post as the timber itself shrinks and swells with the seasons, and once enough staples along a run have popped the wire starts to sag between posts.
Repair means re-tensioning the wire with a strainer before re-stapling, since driving new staples into a slack wire only delays the same sagging rather than fixing it.
Matching a discontinued panel style
Panel profiles and slat widths change between manufacturers and over time, so a boundary installed a decade or more ago may use a profile that's no longer produced.
Where an exact match isn't available, the closest equivalent height and style is used and the mismatch is pointed out honestly rather than presented as an exact replacement.
