Acoustic fencing on a sloped boundary
Where the ground falls away along the boundary, panels are stepped rather than raked so the top of the run stays level with the noise source it's meant to be screening — a raked acoustic panel can leave a gap at one end that lets sound straight through underneath.
On a steep drop, a low retaining detail at the base keeps the panel height consistent along the whole run.
Slat gap ratios in screening fences
Horizontal slatted or louvre fencing is usually specified by a gap-to-board ratio, such as a 20mm gap between 100mm boards, which balances privacy against wind resistance.
A tighter ratio gives more privacy and blocks more wind, which in turn increases the load transferred to posts and foundations during storms, so a very solid-looking slatted screen needs the same foundation attention as a close-boarded panel.
Wider gaps let more wind through and reduce that structural load, while still breaking sightlines enough for most privacy purposes, which is why many slatted designs favour a wider gap than the boards suggest at first glance.
Timber choice for permanently shaded gardens
A garden shaded for most of the day by tall buildings, mature trees or a north-facing aspect keeps timber damp for longer after rain, favouring naturally durable species or a higher treatment class over a standard specification that would be adequate in a sunnier plot.
Composite decking or fencing boards perform more predictably in permanent shade than timber, since they don't rely on drying out between wet spells to avoid fungal decay.
Where timber is preferred for appearance in a shaded garden, more frequent inspection and re-treatment intervals should be built into the maintenance plan from the outset rather than applied reactively once problems appear.
Timber decking board profiles
Grooved decking boards have a reeded or ribbed surface intended to improve underfoot grip, particularly when wet, compared with a smooth-planed board of the same species and treatment.
The grooves can also trap moisture, algae and debris more readily than a smooth board, meaning a grooved deck often needs more regular cleaning to keep the grip benefit from being offset by a slippery algal film.
Reversible boards with a smooth face on one side and grooved on the other let the fitted orientation be chosen, or later reversed once the first face weathers, extending the usable life of the same boards.
Brush application versus spray for treatment
Brush application works the treatment into the grain and end grain more thoroughly, which matters most at cut ends and joints where untreated timber is exposed and most vulnerable to moisture uptake.
Spray application covers a large run far faster and gives a more even surface finish on smooth-planed boards, but relies on good weather and overspray control, and can leave the coating sitting on the surface rather than penetrating as deeply.
A practical approach on a full boundary is spraying the open panel faces for speed and finish, then finishing post tops, end grain and capping joints by hand with a brush.
Concrete post reinforcement
Precast concrete fence posts are reinforced internally with steel rods or mesh running the post's length, which gives the otherwise brittle concrete the tensile strength to resist bending loads from wind pressure on the panels it holds.
The reinforcement needs adequate concrete cover on all sides to stop moisture reaching the steel and causing it to rust and expand, a process that can crack the post from the inside out over time, known as spalling.
A concrete post with reinforcement bar visible or rust-staining at the surface has usually already lost some of its cover and is worth replacing before the cracking spreads further along its length.
Keeping fence design clear of utility meter access points
Gas, electric and water meter boxes set into or near a boundary wall or fence line need to remain accessible for reading and emergency isolation, so a new fence or gate design shouldn't block or panel over an existing meter box without providing an equivalent access route.
This is occasionally missed on a full boundary replacement where the new design closes up an old gap that happened to give meter access, leading to a return visit to cut an access panel back in.
Checking for meter boxes and stopcock covers along the boundary line during survey avoids this rework.
Gate hinge material and load ratings
Gate hinges are rated by the load they can bear without excessive wear or sag, and that rating depends on the hinge's material, its pin diameter and the bearing surface area between the moving parts.
A heavy timber gate on a lightweight hinge designed for a garden gate will wear the pin and bushing far faster than the same hinge on a lighter gate, eventually developing a visible droop at the latch side.
Stainless steel or greased bronze bushings resist wear better than plain steel-on-steel hinges, particularly on gates opened frequently, where repeated friction is the main driver of hinge wear rather than corrosion.
Boundary ownership constraints
Before specifying a heavier acoustic build, boundary ownership is checked against the title plan, since replacing a shared fence with something taller and more substantial without agreement can create a dispute even where the work itself is sound.
Where ownership is unclear or disputed, a fence sits back on the applicant's own land rather than assuming rights over a boundary that isn't clearly theirs.
