A concreted post gives a stiffer, more permanent fixing on soil or made-up ground, but it isn't an option where the surface can't be broken — the choice is driven by the ground, not by preference.
Tamper-proof fixings and shear-nut bolts
Standard hex-head bolts can be undone with a spanner from outside a compound, so security runs use shear-nut or one-way bolts that snap the head off once torqued, leaving nothing for a tool to grip.
These are fitted at pale-to-rail junctions and on any panel that could otherwise be unbolted from outside the line, and they cost little more than standard fixings for a meaningful gain in tamper resistance.
Spigot connections between post and base
A spigot system lets a post be lifted clear of its ground socket for replacement without breaking out the surrounding concrete, which is useful where a vehicle strike or corrosion has damaged one post in an otherwise sound run.
The spigot itself needs to be a snug fit rather than a loose sleeve, because play at that joint under lateral load is what eventually works a socket wider and lets the post rock.

Where one applies, work that would normally be permitted development elsewhere — a new front boundary wall, a taller side fence, even a gate replacement in some cases — needs a full planning application instead.
Article 4 areas are listed on the council's own planning pages or can be confirmed by a quick call to duty planning, and it's worth checking before ordering materials rather than finding out at inspection stage.
Cane bolt leverage on wide leaves
The long shaft of a cane bolt gives more leverage against a wide gate leaf twisting in wind than a short bolt fixed close to the bottom rail, which is why they're specified on wider double-gate leaves rather than narrow pedestrian gates.
A cane bolt still needs a properly prepared ground socket to work, and a shaft dropped onto uneven paving without a socket wears quickly and loses its holding grip.
Visibility splays on corner plots and driveways
Corner plots and driveways onto a road often have a highway visibility splay — a triangular zone near the junction — where boundary height is restricted so drivers and pedestrians can see each other clearly.
These restrictions are usually lower than the standard 1m front-boundary limit and are enforced by the highway authority rather than just general planning policy, so it's worth checking with the council for any plot near a junction or driveway crossing a footway.
Open railings or low planting within a visibility splay are common solutions where some boundary definition is still wanted without blocking sightlines.
Appealing a refused boundary planning application
Where a planning application for a taller or otherwise non-permitted boundary structure is refused, there's a formal right of appeal to the Planning Inspectorate within a set time limit.
Appeals are considered on planning merit rather than personal circumstances, and can take several months to be decided, which is worth factoring into any timeline.
Getting professional planning advice before submitting an appeal often improves the prospects of addressing the reasons for the original refusal effectively.
Siberian larch as a fencing timber
Siberian larch grows slowly in a cold climate, which produces a dense, tight-grained timber with better natural durability than most fast-grown European softwoods, without needing pressure treatment in many applications.
It's noticeably harder to nail and screw without pre-drilling than typical treated pine, and a nail driven in at the wrong angle is more likely to split the board than sink cleanly.
Left unfinished it weathers to a silvery grey similar to cedar, though its higher density means it holds up somewhat better to knocks and general handling on site.
