TPO and conservation-area tree rules
A Tree Preservation Order protects a specific tree, group or woodland, and covers root damage as well as felling or pruning, so unauthorised digging within its root zone is a legal matter, not just good practice.
Trees within a conservation area that aren't individually protected by a TPO still usually require six weeks' written notice to the council before any work, giving the authority a chance to consider a TPO if it judges the tree merits protection.
Checking the council's TPO register and conservation area boundary before excavation is a five-minute task that avoids a potentially serious enforcement issue later.
Choosing post hole diameter for the post size
A hole cut too close to the post's own width leaves no room for concrete to fully surround it, which weakens the base and gives water a direct channel down alongside the timber rather than a solid seal.
A generally quoted rule is a hole roughly three times the post's width, so a 100mm post wants in the region of a 300mm diameter hole, adjusted upward on poor ground or for taller, more heavily loaded posts such as gate posts.
Oversized holes aren't free either — they use more concrete and take longer to backfill and haunch neatly, so the aim is the right diameter for the post and ground rather than simply digging as wide as convenient.
Landlord and void-period turnarounds
Boundary repairs between tenancies are usually driven by a tight void period, where the priority is a straightforward, durable, easy-to-maintain spec rather than a bespoke design, since the landlord isn't the one living behind it.
Standard panel heights and widely-available materials also matter here, because a future repair after another tenant needs to match without a special order or long lead time.
Where several rental properties share the same landlord or managing agent, batching repairs across more than one property in the same visit is often the most efficient way to keep void periods short.
Ground effect on sound propagation
Sound travelling close to the ground interacts with the ground surface itself — soft, absorptive ground like grass attenuates more than hard, reflective ground like tarmac or paving over the same distance.
A garden with a grassed area between the boundary and the house benefits slightly from this ground effect in addition to any barrier, while a fully paved garden loses that extra attenuation and relies more heavily on the barrier alone.
Sourcing genuinely acoustic-rated materials
Some products marketed as acoustic fencing are simply a standard panel with acoustic branding, without the mass, density or sealing detail that actually drives performance, so a specification sheet with real figures is worth asking for.
Comparing stated weight per square metre and construction detail across products, rather than relying on the word acoustic in a product name, is the more reliable way to judge whether a panel will perform as expected.
Checking and shakes as timber dries
Checking refers to small surface splits that open along the grain as the outer face of a timber dries and shrinks faster than the still-damp core, and it's a normal, largely cosmetic feature of drying softwood rather than a structural fault.
Shakes are a related but distinct defect present in the standing tree or log itself, such as a separation between growth rings, and can run deeper into a section than surface checking.
A moderate amount of surface checking on a post or rail doesn't usually compromise strength, but a shake running the length of a load-bearing post is worth inspecting before use, since it can concentrate stress along that plane.
Non-slip decking finishes
A grooved board profile gives some grip when dry but can still become slippery once algae builds up in a shaded or north-facing spot, which is a maintenance issue rather than something a profile alone solves permanently.
Anti-slip decking strips or grit-impregnated coatings can be added to steps and high-traffic areas as a supplementary measure, and are worth specifying on steps or ramps even where the main deck area doesn't need them.
Some composite ranges are manufactured with a textured or embossed surface aimed specifically at slip resistance, which is worth checking against a wet-slip rating rather than assuming all composite boards perform the same underfoot.
Refrigeration chiller unit noise
An external chiller or condenser unit for commercial refrigeration produces a continuous low-frequency hum from its compressor and fan, and low-frequency noise is harder for a barrier to attenuate than higher-pitched sound.
A dense, well-sealed enclosure close around the unit itself tends to help more than a distant boundary fence, since it intercepts the noise at source rather than after it has already spread across a yard.
Timber species and on-site workability
Workability describes how easily a timber can be sawn, planed, nailed and screwed without splitting, tearing or blunting tools excessively, and it varies considerably between species independent of durability or strength.
Straight-grained, moderate-density softwoods like redwood pine are generally easier to work on site than dense hardwoods or highly figured timber with interlocked or wavy grain, which can tear out during cutting or planing.
A timber chosen purely for durability or appearance without considering workability can significantly slow on-site fitting, particularly where a lot of site cutting and drilling is needed rather than factory-machined components.
Tall fences, shading and neighbour relations
A tall boundary fence can significantly shade a neighbouring garden depending on orientation, and while there's no general legal right to a set amount of sunlight in a garden, an unusually tall or dark structure close to a shared boundary is a common source of neighbour friction.
Slatted, louvred or partially open designs let some light and air through while still giving privacy, which is often a reasonable middle ground where a fully solid fence would cause a shading complaint.
Discussing height and design with an affected neighbour before building, even where there's no legal requirement to, tends to avoid a dispute that a technically-compliant fence wouldn't otherwise resolve.
Prioritising gate spec over fence spec under a limited budget
Where a security budget doesn't stretch to upgrading an entire boundary at once, spending proportionally more on the gate and its ironmongery than on the fence panels themselves is usually the better trade-off, since a gate junction is statistically the more common point of forced entry than a length of intact fence.
A phased approach that fits a strong gate first and upgrades panel sections over following phases still leaves weaker fence runs as the interim weak point, so this trade-off is only sound as a first step, not a final specification.
