Fixing a fence run to an existing masonry wall
Tying a timber fence into an existing brick or block wall usually means fixing a timber post or batten flat to the wall face with masonry bolts or heavy-duty frame fixings rather than digging a post hole hard against the footing.
The wall's own condition matters before any fixing goes in — loose pointing, spalled brick faces or a wall already leaning shouldn't be relied on to carry lateral load from a fence panel.
Where the wall belongs to a neighbour or is shared, fixing into it without agreement can be a boundary matter in its own right, separate from the fencing work itself.
Distinguishing checking from structural splitting
Surface checking, fine drying cracks confined to the outer face of a timber section, is cosmetic and doesn't usually run deep enough to compromise a post or rail's strength.
A structural split runs further into or along the timber, sometimes right through a section, and can significantly reduce the effective load-bearing area at that point, particularly if it passes through a fixing or joint.
The practical test is depth and location: a shallow surface check away from any fixing is rarely a concern, while any split intersecting a bolt hole, mortice or bearing point is worth assessing before continued use.
Detached plots with a paddock or field edge
Detached properties backing onto a paddock, field or grazing land need a boundary that does two jobs at once — keeping the garden private and, if livestock use the adjoining land, keeping animals off the garden side.

Post-mix curing times
Fast-setting post-mix concrete typically reaches a workable set within 10-30 minutes, holding a post upright without props, but its full design strength isn't reached for several days afterwards, and lateral loads applied too soon can shift the post before it's cured.
Standard site-mixed concrete cures more slowly than fast-setting post-mix but generally achieves a denser, less porous final material, which some contractors prefer for structural gate posts subject to repeated racking loads.
Cold weather slows the curing chemistry considerably in both cases, and concrete placed close to freezing can be seriously weakened if it freezes before curing, which is why exposed posts set in winter often need extra time before load is applied.
Hardwood options for gates
Gates take more racking stress than a fixed fence panel, opening and closing on a single edge, which is why hardwoods such as oak or iroko are often specified for gates even where the adjoining fence is softwood.
Oak's natural durability means it can be left untreated and will weather to silver-grey, but it also moves seasonally and can stain surrounding masonry with tannin run-off in wet weather, which is worth flagging before it's fitted next to a pale render or paving.
Hardwood gate frames are usually built with mortice-and-tenon joints rather than the simple nailed or bracketed joints acceptable on a softwood panel, since the joint has to resist years of racking without loosening.
Pet-proofing a garden boundary
Dogs that dig will often go under a fence line rather than over it, so a gravel board or buried mesh apron at the base does more to keep a determined digger in than extra height above ground.
Gaps at gate thresholds and where a fence meets a wall or building are the most common escape points, and are worth checking specifically rather than assuming a continuous fence line is actually continuous at ground level.
Smaller or younger dogs and cats can fit through gaps that look too small to be a concern, so picket or trellis-style boundaries usually need a solid section or mesh backing if pet containment is the priority.
Maintenance intervals by material
Untreated or lightly treated softwood fencing generally needs a re-stain or re-oil every one to two years to keep its protective coating intact, while a well-detailed treated softwood fence left to weather naturally can go much longer between any active maintenance.
Composite and uPVC fencing need little more than an occasional wash down, since the material itself doesn't need a protective coating, though fixings and any timber sub-frame beneath it still age on their own separate schedule.
Metal railings and gates need their finish checked periodically for scratches or corrosion starting points, since a small breach in galvanising or powder coating left untreated will spread under the coating rather than staying contained.
Fast-setting post mix performance in cold, exposed conditions
Fast-setting post-fix concrete generates heat as it cures, which normally helps it set reliably even in cool weather, but on a genuinely exposed and cold site that heat can be carried away faster than it's generated, slowing or compromising the cure.
In these conditions a longer undisturbed curing period, or a mix formulated for cold-weather use, gives a more reliable result than assuming a fast-set product will behave the same as it would in a sheltered garden.
Posts loaded too soon after pouring on an exposed site — by wind rather than by the installer — are a genuine risk that doesn't apply in the same way to a sheltered, still garden.
