This is the practical reason cut ends need separate end-grain treatment, since a fresh cut through the envelope exposes untreated core timber that the original pressure treatment never reached.

Dragging posts, panels or a wheelbarrow across paving can chip edges or scratch a polished or textured finish, so boards or protective sheeting laid along the route reduce that risk on a patio the client wants kept intact.

A fence built to the usual permitted development height can still breach a specific visibility splay condition attached to the property, especially where one was imposed when the driveway was originally created.
Checking historic planning conditions for the property, or asking the council's highways team, is worth doing before fencing close to any vehicle crossing.
Over-boarding as an alternative to board-by-board replacement
Over-boarding fixes new feather-edge boards directly over an existing run rather than stripping and replacing individual damaged boards, which suits a run with widespread but shallow weathering rather than a handful of severe failures.
It doesn't fix a failing arris rail or post underneath, so it's only appropriate once the frame behind the boards has been checked and confirmed sound, otherwise the extra weight of a second layer of boards can accelerate a frame that was already borderline.
Working hours restrictions set by councils
Most councils set standard permitted working hours for construction noise, commonly something like 8am to 6pm on weekdays and a shorter window on Saturdays, with no noisy work at all on Sundays and bank holidays, though the exact hours vary by borough.
These restrictions apply regardless of whether formal planning permission was needed for the work itself, and are usually enforced under separate environmental health powers rather than the planning system.
On a site with a specific planning condition attached, hours can be tighter still, so it's worth checking any condition notice as well as the general council policy before committing to a start time.
Timber strength grading classes
Structural timber is graded into strength classes such as C16 or C24 based on visual inspection of defects like knots and slope of grain, or by machine stress grading that measures stiffness directly.
C24 timber has been graded to a higher strength and stiffness threshold than C16, and is specified where a structural calculation demands it, such as a longer unsupported gate post span, rather than chosen purely by appearance.
Fencing timber is rarely strength-graded in the same formal way as construction timber, which is one reason gate posts subject to real structural calculation sometimes specify a graded section rather than standard fencing stock.
Wind load: solid panels versus slatted screens
A solid close-boarded panel presents its whole face to the wind, so on an exposed run the load transferred into the post is far higher than the same height in a slatted or louvred screen with even small gaps between boards.
Manufacturers' span tables for solid panels assume a sheltered suburban garden; on an open plot the safe bay width between posts often needs reducing rather than relying on the standard 1.8m centre.

Grooved decking boards are often assumed to be more slip-resistant than a smooth reeded board, but grooves can actually hold water, algae and leaf debris that make the surface more slippery if it isn't cleaned regularly, rather than less.
A smooth board kept clean and free of algae, or a textured composite surface designed specifically for grip, often performs better in practice than a grooved timber board left unmaintained.
Orientation of grooves relative to the main walking direction, and a regular cleaning routine, matter more to actual slip performance than the board profile alone.
