Specifying the wrong class isn't always obvious at installation, since both can look identical when new, but it shows up years later as premature rot concentrated at ground level rather than along the whole length.

The green or brown tint in pressure-treated softwood comes from a pigment or dye added to the preservative solution during treatment, largely as a visual indicator that the timber has been through the process rather than for any protective purpose.

Where a ha-ha exists on a historic estate boundary, it's sometimes a designated heritage feature in its own right, in which case altering or fencing over it needs the same care as any other listed landscape feature.
More often a ditch boundary is simply a drainage feature rather than a heritage one, in which case a fence set back from the ditch edge, rather than spanning it, avoids undermining the bank.
Moss and damp on shaded boundaries
A boundary shaded for most of the day by a building, high hedge or overhanging trees dries far more slowly after rain than an open, sunlit run, and that prolonged dampness is what allows moss and algae to establish on timber.
Beyond the cosmetic green staining, sustained damp accelerates fungal decay in untreated or lightly treated softwood, shortening its service life compared with an identical fence in a sunnier position.
Species and treatment choice matter more on these boundaries — a naturally durable timber or a heavier preservative treatment earns its cost back in reduced maintenance on a permanently shaded run.
