Gate hinges are rated by the load they can bear without excessive wear or sag, and that rating depends on the hinge's material, its pin diameter and the bearing surface area between the moving parts.

The trade-off is that these coatings are usually applied by wire-drawing or continuous coil coating processes rather than batch hot-dip immersion, which limits them to certain product types rather than large fabricated steelwork.
Compost bins and damp concentration against a fence
A compost bin or heap placed directly against a fence line concentrates moisture and organic decay right at the timber surface, which is a common and avoidable cause of localised rot on an otherwise healthy run.
A gap of even a few hundred millimetres between the bin and the fence, or a bin set on a hard base rather than directly against timber, avoids this concentrated exposure.
It's a detail worth raising with clients at handover, since it's the kind of everyday garden use that isn't obvious as a fence maintenance issue until the damage has already occurred.
Aluminium extrusion profiles
Aluminium fencing and gate components are typically formed by extrusion, forcing heated aluminium billet through a shaped die to produce a continuous profile with a consistent cross-section, which allows complex hollow or ribbed shapes not practical in sawn timber or rolled steel.
Extruded profiles are usually finished with an anodised or powder-coated surface, since bare aluminium forms a natural oxide layer that resists corrosion well but can look dull and inconsistent if left unfinished.
Aluminium's lower strength relative to steel for a given section size means extruded profiles are often designed with internal ribbing or a boxed cross-section to achieve adequate rigidity without excessive material thickness.
Run-off from a neighbour's hardstanding
A neighbouring driveway, patio or other hard surface that slopes toward a shared boundary sends its rainfall run-off directly onto the adjoining plot rather than allowing it to soak away locally, and that concentrated flow is often worse than ordinary rainfall on open ground.
A fence sitting in the path of that run-off can see its base saturated far more often than the rest of the same run, shortening the life of posts and gravel boards at that point specifically.
Where this is a known issue, a shallow channel or permeable strip along the fence line intercepts the flow before it reaches the timber, rather than leaving the fence itself to act as the only barrier.
Fitting post caps correctly to shed water
A post cap that doesn't fully overhang the post's top edge on all sides leaves a lip where water can track back under the cap and sit on the end grain, defeating much of its purpose.
Pyramid or weathered profile caps shed water faster than a flat cap, which matters more on an exposed post than a sheltered one, though either performs better than no cap at all on a cut post top.
Caps fixed with a single central nail can work loose and rock in wind, letting water in at the edges; a bead of exterior adhesive under the cap in addition to fixings gives a more weathertight result.
Board spacing and decking drainage
Decking boards need a consistent gap between them, usually a few millimetres, to let rainwater drain through rather than pool on the surface and accelerate algae growth or rot.
Timber that's fitted too tightly when green will open up gaps as it dries, while composite boards expand and contract with temperature and need the gap specified by the manufacturer, not guessed on site.
A deck built without a fall or slight pitch away from the house risks water sitting against the property's damp-proof course, which is a bigger problem than a slippery deck surface.
Limits of assessing a repair from photos alone before a site visit
A photo can show an obviously snapped post or a collapsed panel clearly enough to plan materials in advance, but it rarely shows ground conditions, the state of neighbouring posts, or hidden rot just below soil level that only a physical probe test reveals.
Treating a photo assessment as a starting point rather than a final scope avoids arriving on site to find the repair is larger, or smaller, than the photos suggested.
Gust funnelling between semi-detached gaps
The narrow gap between two semi-detached or terraced houses can accelerate wind passing through it, in the same way air speeds up through a nozzle, so a fence sitting at the mouth of that gap sees higher gusts than the open garden either side.
This is easy to miss on a site visit if the wind isn't blowing that day, but it shows up over a few winters as one particular bay of panelling failing repeatedly while the rest of the run stays sound.
Reinforcing just that section with a heavier post or a part-slatted panel is usually enough, rather than upgrading the whole run.
Commercial and site boundary fencing
Commercial boundaries — industrial units, retail yards, small business premises — usually prioritise security and low maintenance over appearance, which points toward galvanised steel palisade, weldmesh or heavy-duty timber closeboard rather than decorative panel fencing.
Access control matters more here too: wide vehicle gates need clearances checked against delivery vehicle turning circles, not just car dimensions, and a site with out-of-hours deliveries may need lockable pedestrian access separate from the main gate.
Any work adjoining a public footpath or road also needs to think about temporary hoarding and public safety during installation, not just the finished boundary.
