A bin store hides the wheelie bins and recycling boxes that otherwise sit in the front garden. We build timber and slatted bin stores and simple bin screens to fit the space you have, whether that is a strip beside the front path or a corner of a side return, and match them to your fence or gate.
Because each one is built to fit, it can take the exact number and size of bins your council gives you, rather than the nearest stock size.
Bin store or bin screen
A full bin store has a frame, sides, a lid and doors or an open front. It keeps bins out of sight from every angle and gives a flat top. A bin screen is simpler: a slatted panel or short run of fencing that hides the bins from the street or the house, with open access behind. Screens suit side returns and spaces where a lid would be awkward.
Sizing to your bins
Councils use different bin sizes and different numbers of boxes, so we start with what you actually have. Measure each bin, including the handle and the lid when open, and count the boxes. The store needs enough room to roll the bins out easily on collection day, and lids need to open fully without hitting the store's own lid.
- Number and size of wheelie bins
- Recycling boxes and food caddies
- Space to roll bins in and out
- Lid clearance inside the store
Lids, doors and open tops
Lift-up lids let you drop rubbish in without pulling the bin out. Front doors make it easier to wheel bins out. Open-top screens are the simplest and suit tall bins. Hinges and stays are chosen for the weight, so lids do not slam.
Matching your fence or gate
A bin store looks best when it uses the same boards, slats or colour as the fence or gate beside it. Slatted stores match slatted fencing and screens; closeboard-style stores match a traditional front fence. Our front garden fencing and garden side gates pages show the styles we usually match to.
Bases and position
A bin store should stand on a firm, level, hard surface so bins roll easily and the timber is kept off wet ground. If the store sits on soil or gravel, it is raised on a frame or set on posts so the bottom does not rot. Keep it close to the route to the street, and away from windows where possible.
How a bin store job runs
Send a photo of the space and the bins, with measurements of each bin. For side returns, our side return gates page covers gates that can be built alongside, and our garden privacy screens page covers screening elsewhere in the garden.
Send us photos and rough measurements, we send a written estimate, then we visit to confirm before work starts. We cover London and Hertfordshire.
