It's a common mix-up to apply fence height limits to an outbuilding, or vice versa, when checking what's allowed near a boundary line.

Visibility splays on corner plots and driveways
Corner plots and driveways onto a road often have a highway visibility splay — a triangular zone near the junction — where boundary height is restricted so drivers and pedestrians can see each other clearly.
These restrictions are usually lower than the standard 1m front-boundary limit and are enforced by the highway authority rather than just general planning policy, so it's worth checking with the council for any plot near a junction or driveway crossing a footway.
Open railings or low planting within a visibility splay are common solutions where some boundary definition is still wanted without blocking sightlines.
Protecting a driveway surface during on-site concrete mixing
Mixing concrete directly on a resin-bound, block-paved or stamped concrete driveway risks permanent staining if spilt mix isn't cleared immediately, since cement staining bonds into a porous surface far more readily than it wipes off.
A mixing board or tray, and a bucket of clean water kept nearby to rinse tools and any spillage straight away, are simple precautions that cost little time compared with the alternative of professionally cleaning a stained driveway afterwards.

Stain, oil and paint finishes compared
A stain sits mostly on the surface with some absorption, giving colour and some UV protection while still letting the timber's grain show through, and it typically needs reapplying every couple of years on an exposed fence.
An oil penetrates further into the timber and feeds it rather than just coating it, which suits open-grained hardwood decking and cladding, but it wears off through foot traffic and weathering faster than a stain on a vertical surface.
Paint gives the most complete colour coverage and hides the timber grain entirely, but it also traps moisture behind an intact film if the substrate isn't fully dry, and a failed paint film is harder to recover from than a faded stain, which just needs cleaning and recoating.
Cladding fixing pattern and thermal movement
Timber cladding boards are usually fixed with a single row of fixings near one edge rather than through the centre, allowing the board to expand and contract slightly around that fixed edge without the fixing itself resisting the movement.
Fixing through both edges of a wide board effectively locks it in place, which forces any subsequent expansion or shrinkage to manifest as cupping, splitting or fixing failure rather than free movement.
This detail becomes more important as board width increases, since a narrow board moves relatively little in absolute terms while a wide board can move several millimetres across its face between a dry and a humid spell.
Corrosion inspection on buried metal fixings
Metal post anchors, brackets and shoes set at or below ground level corrode out of sight, meaning surface appearance above ground can look sound even where the buried portion has significantly deteriorated.
Rust staining bleeding up the timber post from ground level, or visible movement at the base despite an apparently solid concrete surround, are common indirect signs of corrosion happening below the visible surface.
Because the failure mode is progressive and hidden, periodic inspection of exposed fixings as a proxy, combined with checking for movement, is generally the practical approach rather than routinely excavating buried anchors.

A post position that lands directly on or straddling an existing paving slab or patio edge either means lifting and relaying that slab, or nudging the post along the line to land in a joint or open ground instead.
Where lifting a slab is unavoidable, checking what's bedded underneath — a solid mortar base rather than loose sand — before committing to reinstating it in the same spot avoids an unpleasant surprise partway through.
On a patio the client wants kept intact, agreeing acceptable post positions against the actual slab layout at the survey stage avoids a decision being made on the day between two imperfect options.
Combining a windbreak hedge with a lighter fence
Planting a windbreak hedge or shrub line on the exposed side of a fence reduces the wind load the fence structure has to carry directly, since the vegetation absorbs and diffuses much of the force before it reaches the panels.
This takes several years to become effective as the planting matures, so it's usually specified alongside a fence built to cope with full exposure initially, with the expectation that loads reduce over time rather than the reverse.
It's a useful option where a client wants a lighter, less heavily-specified fence than pure exposure would otherwise demand, provided they accept the interim years before the hedge does its share of the work.

Properties without mains drainage, more common on the rural fringes of Hertfordshire, often have a septic tank or soakaway drainage field with pipework running across the garden that a fence line can unknowingly cross.

Powder-coat pre-treatment
Powder coating is only as durable as the surface preparation beneath it, and steel that hasn't been degreased, and often chemically pre-treated with a phosphate or chromate conversion coating, will let the powder coat lift and blister within a season or two.
On galvanised steel specifically, a specialist pre-treatment is needed because standard powder coat doesn't bond reliably to a plain zinc surface without it, which is why powder-coated galvanised railings are a distinct product from simply galvanised steel painted afterwards.
Once properly applied and cured, the powder coat itself is a hard, continuous barrier finish that resists chipping better than wet paint, though any breach down to bare metal will corrode locally without a way to self-heal.
Checking a frame is square before re-hanging
A frame that's been repaired or partially rebuilt is checked for square by measuring both diagonals rather than by eye, since a frame can look straight from the front while still being out of square enough to bind against its post.
Only once the diagonals match is the gate face re-hung onto the corrected frame.
Safety considerations on a storm-damage repair

Rights of way and access easements
An easement giving a neighbour or utility a right of way across part of a garden — commonly a rear access strip or shared side passage — survives a change of ownership and restricts what can be built across it, including fences and gates.
A gate across an easement is sometimes acceptable if it's left unlocked or a key is provided to the dominant owner, but a solid fence that blocks the route entirely is a breach even if the current beneficiary rarely uses it.
The Land Registry title register will usually record a formal easement, so it's worth checking before fencing off any access strip that looks unused, since 'unused' and 'extinguished' are legally different things.
Level differences between plots and who retains
Where two plots sit at different levels, the general presumption in law is that whoever created the level difference — usually by cutting or raising ground during earlier development — is responsible for retaining it, though on old or unclear plots this isn't always documented.
A fence contractor isn't in a position to resolve a retaining dispute, but should flag it clearly where a proposed fence line runs directly along or above an unretained level change, since a fence is not a retaining structure and shouldn't be asked to do that job.
Getting this distinction agreed in writing between neighbours before work starts avoids the fence being blamed later for a ground movement problem it never caused.
Zinc-aluminium coatings
Zinc-aluminium alloy coatings, sold under various trade names, combine zinc's sacrificial protection with aluminium's more stable barrier properties, generally giving longer service life than pure zinc galvanising in the same environment.
They're commonly used on wire products and fixings destined for coastal or heavily salted road environments, where standard galvanising alone corrodes faster than inland applications.
The trade-off is that these coatings are usually applied by wire-drawing or continuous coil coating processes rather than batch hot-dip immersion, which limits them to certain product types rather than large fabricated steelwork.
Evidence photos for a repair or claim
Dated photographs of the damage taken before any clearance or repair work starts give a clearer record of the original condition than photos taken partway through the job.
Wide shots showing the whole run alongside close-ups of the specific failure point are generally more useful as a record than close-ups alone.
End-grain sealing on cut timber
End grain is far more absorbent than a timber's long faces because it exposes the open ends of the wood's vascular cells, so a post or rail cut to length on site can soak up moisture many times faster at the cut end than elsewhere.
Leaving a fresh cut untreated is one of the more common ways a pressure-treated timber ends up rotting from the middle outwards, since the factory treatment doesn't extend to a cut made after the fact.
A brush-applied end-grain preservative or sealant on every site-cut post base and rail end restores some of that lost protection, and takes only a few minutes per cut relative to the risk it avoids.
Ledger board fixing to an existing wall
A ledger board bolted to an existing house wall to support one edge of a deck needs to be fixed through masonry into structural material, with a damp-proof membrane strip behind it and flashing above to stop water tracking into the wall build-up.
Fixing a ledger to a cavity wall needs care to avoid bridging the cavity or compressing insulation, and on a rendered or clad wall the fixings need to reach the structural leaf behind the finish rather than just gripping the surface material.
Where the wall build-up is unclear or the deck is heavily loaded, a free-standing beam and post arrangement independent of the house wall avoids the risk altogether.
Acoustic and noise-reducing boundaries
A garden backing onto a busy road, railway line or commercial yard can benefit from a boundary built with sound reduction in mind, though a garden fence will never fully block road noise the way a proper acoustic barrier does.
Solid, gap-free construction matters more than material choice — close-boarded overlap timber with no sightlines through it performs noticeably better than a picket or slatted style, and any gaps at the base undo much of the benefit.
Denser materials and added mass, such as a composite core or an additional inner skin, do help further, but the single biggest factor is simply eliminating gaps and sightlines through the run.
Kiln-dried versus green timber movement
Green (wet, unseasoned) timber is cheaper and easier to nail without splitting, but it shrinks noticeably as it dries in situ, which opens gaps between overlapping boards and can loosen fixings within the first year.
Kiln-dried timber has already lost most of that moisture before it reaches site, so it holds its dimensions far better once fixed, at a higher material cost.
Closeboard fencing traditionally tolerates green feather-edge boards reasonably well because the overlap absorbs some shrinkage, but a tight tongue-and-groove or slatted panel is far less forgiving and benefits from kiln-dried stock.
Tamper-evident caps over external fixing bolts
A plastic or metal tamper-evident cap fitted over an external bolt head shows visible signs of damage if someone has attempted to remove it, giving a maintenance team an early visual signal that a section of fence has been interfered with even where nothing has actually come loose.
This is a low-cost addition on a run where fixings are otherwise exposed, and it's most useful on a boundary that isn't checked in person every day, where interference could otherwise go unnoticed for some time.
