A security fence needs the same seasonal checks as any boundary — loose fixings, gate sag and corrosion on steel ironmongery are the things that quietly turn a secure line into a weak one over a couple of years.
Checking hinge and lock hardware regularly matters more here than on a standard fence, because that's the point most attempts actually target.
Balancing tight mesh apertures against airflow around plant equipment
A tight-aperture high-security mesh gives strong resistance to climbing and reach-through, but wrapped closely around outdoor plant equipment such as chillers or generators it can restrict airflow needed for the equipment to run efficiently.
Setting the mesh enclosure at a slight distance from the equipment casing, or specifying a marginally larger aperture where the site's threat assessment allows it, keeps most of the security benefit while avoiding an airflow restriction that could affect equipment performance.
Licences for scaffold or skip on the highway
Placing a skip, scaffold or hoarding on the public highway, including the pavement outside a property, needs a licence from the council's highways team, arranged before the item arrives rather than after a complaint.
Licences typically specify lighting, cones or barriers around the obstruction overnight, a maximum duration, and sometimes a requirement for the skip to be removed or covered at weekends, with conditions varying between boroughs.
Unlicensed obstructions can result in a fixed penalty or a requirement to remove the item at short notice, so on any job needing highway space for materials or waste it's worth building the licence lead time into the programme.
Rights of way and access easements
An easement giving a neighbour or utility a right of way across part of a garden — commonly a rear access strip or shared side passage — survives a change of ownership and restricts what can be built across it, including fences and gates.
A gate across an easement is sometimes acceptable if it's left unlocked or a key is provided to the dominant owner, but a solid fence that blocks the route entirely is a breach even if the current beneficiary rarely uses it.
The Land Registry title register will usually record a formal easement, so it's worth checking before fencing off any access strip that looks unused, since 'unused' and 'extinguished' are legally different things.
Selvedge detailing on chain-link mesh
The selvedge is the twisted or knuckled edge finish at the top and bottom of a chain-link roll, and a twisted (barbed) selvedge gives a rougher, harder-to-grip edge than a knuckled one, which is a small but relevant detail on a security-rated chain-link run.
A knuckled selvedge is safer where the fence is near public access because it removes the sharp twisted ends, so the choice between the two trades off deterrent value against injury risk in the same way as toppings do.
Smallholdings
A smallholding often needs several different boundary specifications on one plot — stock fencing for grazing paddocks, a more secure perimeter around poultry runs to keep foxes out, and a conventional garden fence around the house itself.
Movement of livestock between fields is usually managed with gates rather than continuous fence removal, so gate positions need agreeing against the smallholder's actual rotation pattern rather than simply the shortest route.
Because smallholdings often combine agricultural and residential use on the same title, it's worth checking which parts of a boundary project count as agricultural permitted development and which fall under the standard residential rules.
Keeping vegetation clear of a sealed panel face
Climbing plants or dense shrub growth pressed against an acoustic panel face can trap moisture against the timber, accelerating rot exactly at the sealed joints where damage is hardest to spot early.
Keeping a small clearance between planting and the panel face, and cutting back growth that does make contact, protects the sealing details without requiring the planting to be removed altogether.
Extending an existing acoustic fence upward
Adding height to an existing acoustic panel run means checking the existing posts and foundations can carry both the extra weight and the increased wind loading a taller panel brings, rather than simply bolting more panel onto what's there.
In many cases the existing posts were sized for the original height only, and extending upward without checking this can lead to lean or failure that a like-for-like replacement wouldn't have caused.
Exposed plots and wind funnelling between buildings
Wind doesn't just hit a fence head-on — gaps between buildings, especially in newer estate layouts with narrow side passages, can funnel and accelerate wind locally well beyond the general forecast for the area.
A fence positioned at the end of such a gap can see significantly higher loading than an identical run a few metres away in the lee of a building.
Recognising these funnelling positions at quote stage, and specifying heavier posts or a part-open panel design there, is more reliable than treating an entire plot as uniformly exposed or sheltered.
