Comparative shrinkage rates across species
Different timber species shrink by noticeably different amounts for the same change in moisture content, with some tropical hardwoods moving comparatively little and some softwoods, particularly in the tangential direction, moving considerably more.
This matters when mixing species within the same structure, such as a hardwood gate frame with softwood infill boards, since the two materials can move at different rates and open gaps or induce stress at their junctions.
Manufacturers' technical data sheets for structural and decorative timber usually list expected shrinkage percentages, which is the more reliable way to anticipate this than relying on general species reputation alone.
Non-slip decking finishes
A grooved board profile gives some grip when dry but can still become slippery once algae builds up in a shaded or north-facing spot, which is a maintenance issue rather than something a profile alone solves permanently.
Anti-slip decking strips or grit-impregnated coatings can be added to steps and high-traffic areas as a supplementary measure, and are worth specifying on steps or ramps even where the main deck area doesn't need them.
Some composite ranges are manufactured with a textured or embossed surface aimed specifically at slip resistance, which is worth checking against a wet-slip rating rather than assuming all composite boards perform the same underfoot.
Choosing a self-closing mechanism for pool or drive gates
A spring-loaded hinge, hydraulic closer, or gravity-hinge design (where the hinge itself is angled so the gate swings closed under its own weight) each achieve self-closing in a different way, with different maintenance needs and different feel in use.
Gravity hinges are mechanically simple and low-maintenance but rely on the gate post and hinge post staying accurately set, since any settling changes the closing behaviour.
Hydraulic or spring closers give a more consistent, adjustable close but are an additional mechanical component that itself needs occasional servicing or replacement over the gate's life.
Working around pets and children on site
An open trench, a stack of loose posts or a partially removed fence panel is an obvious hazard for a young child or an excitable dog, and on an occupied family garden it's worth agreeing at survey stage how pets will be kept away from the working area each day.
A garden with no boundary at all for part of a working day — because the old fence has come down and the new one isn't up yet — needs a temporary barrier or a clear arrangement for keeping animals indoors until the run is complete.
Leaving tools, concrete mix or offcuts accessible overnight on a site with children present is worth avoiding even where the work itself is finished for the day.
Diffraction depends on frequency
Sound diffracts, or bends, over a barrier's top edge more easily at low frequencies than at high frequencies, which is why a barrier tends to be more effective against a car's high-pitched tyre roar than against a lorry's low engine rumble.
This frequency dependence is one reason a barrier that clearly helps with one noise source can feel less effective against another nearby source with different frequency content, even at the same measured level.
Checking wall coping condition before fixing into it
Coping stones or brick-on-edge capping along the top of a garden wall are often loosely bedded rather than solidly fixed, so drilling or clamping a fence post bracket into coping without checking it first can dislodge the coping itself.
A quick check by hand-pressure on each coping unit along the intended fixing line identifies any that are already loose, which is worth doing before committing to that wall as a fixing point at all.
Where coping is sound, spreading the fixing load across a bracket plate rather than a single point fixing reduces the chance of cracking the coping under wind load on the panels above.
Digging near land drains
Older gardens, especially those on heavier clay, sometimes have unrecorded clay pipe or perforated plastic land drains laid to relieve waterlogging, and these rarely appear on any plan.
Hitting one with an auger usually shows up as a sudden drop in resistance followed by water pooling in the hole from a direction that doesn't match the water table generally on site.
A damaged land drain should be reconnected or rerouted rather than just backfilled over, since a broken run can redirect water against a post base for years afterwards.
Basketball hoop and ball-bounce noise
The repeated impact noise of a ball bouncing on a hard driveway surface, or striking a hoop backboard, is an impulsive sound rather than a continuous one, and impulsive noise tends to be judged as more intrusive than steady noise of a similar average level.
A barrier reduces the airborne carry of that impact noise into a neighbouring garden, though the underlying activity and its timing remain outside what any fence can control.
Turning and manoeuvring noise in a cul-de-sac
A cul-de-sac head sees vehicles braking, reversing and turning rather than passing through at a steady speed, producing a different noise character from a through road — shorter bursts, more low-speed engine and tyre noise, and occasional reversing alarms.
A plot on the turning head benefits from a barrier assessed against this stop-start pattern rather than against a through-traffic model, since the noise events are more frequent but individually shorter.
Diagnosing gate sag: hinge, post, or frame
A sagging gate can stem from three distinct causes that need different fixes — worn or undersized hinges, a hinge post that has itself leaned out of true, or a gate frame that has racked out of square through inadequate diagonal bracing.
Testing the diagonal measurement corner-to-corner on the gate frame quickly shows whether the frame itself has racked, while checking the hinge post with a spirit level separately identifies a foundation problem rather than a hardware one.
Treating a leaning-post problem with heavier hinges alone doesn't fix the underlying cause and the gate will sag again once the new hinges have taken up their own wear.
Planting distances from a new fence line
Shrubs and hedging planted hard against a new fence eventually push against the panel faces as they mature, trapping moisture against the timber and making later maintenance or panel replacement far harder without disturbing established roots.
A gap of a few hundred millimetres, sized to the expected mature spread of the species chosen, keeps airflow behind the fence and leaves room to work if a panel needs replacing years later.
This is worth raising at the design stage, since it is far easier to plan spacing before planting than to relocate mature shrubs once they have grown into the fence line.
Segregating timber and concrete waste
Treated timber, plain untreated offcuts and broken concrete are usually classed and processed differently at a waste facility, so keeping them in separate piles or skip compartments on site can reduce disposal cost and avoid a mixed load being rejected.
Old concrete post bases and gravel boards are inert waste and can sometimes be crushed and reused as hardcore rather than sent to landfill, which is worth checking with the waste carrier before assuming it all goes in one load.
Metal fittings — old hinges, bolts, wire ties — pulled out during a strip-down are usually worth separating too, since scrap metal is handled through a different route to general construction waste.
Historic ha-ha and ditch boundaries
Some older rural and semi-rural Hertfordshire properties retain a ha-ha — a sunken ditch-and-wall boundary designed to keep a view open while still containing livestock — rather than a conventional fence line.
Where a ha-ha exists on a historic estate boundary, it's sometimes a designated heritage feature in its own right, in which case altering or fencing over it needs the same care as any other listed landscape feature.
More often a ditch boundary is simply a drainage feature rather than a heritage one, in which case a fence set back from the ditch edge, rather than spanning it, avoids undermining the bank.
