The cost difference between the two grades is usually small relative to the fitting itself, so specifying 316 near a heavily gritted road is generally worth it for the extended service life alone.

Grooved boards trap dirt and moisture in the channels more than a smooth or rounded profile, so they need more regular brushing or washing to avoid becoming slippery with algae, particularly in shaded, damp positions.
Composite boards are usually extruded with a fixed groove or embossed texture rather than milled, and the profile is generally part of a wider system with matching edge trims rather than a feature that can be mixed freely between board types.
Panel versus closeboard repair economics
A panel fence is repaired panel by panel, so a single damaged section is a straightforward swap, whereas a closeboard fence is repaired board by board, which suits a partial repair better but takes longer per linear metre.
Where storm damage has hit a wide section, a panel system is often quicker to put right; where only a handful of boards are affected, closeboard repair wastes far less sound material.

Where a fence meets a party wall or a stepped brick boundary, an ill-fitting junction leaves a gap that undoes the security of the whole run, so infill panels or a scribed timber closer are cut to follow the step rather than left square.
On an older terrace the brickwork step is rarely uniform along its length, so each junction is measured on site instead of assuming a standard offset.
Granular base layers under post concrete
A layer of compacted hardcore, crushed stone or pea gravel placed in the bottom of a post hole before concrete gives the post something firm to bear on and stops it sinking slightly as the concrete cures.
On free-draining ground that granular layer also gives water somewhere to go rather than pooling under the post base, which matters most where the water table sits close to the surface.
Skipping this layer on soft or waterlogged ground is a common reason a post that was plumb on installation day settles a few degrees out of true over its first winter.
Fall direction and drainage across a deck
A deck built dead level holds standing water after rain, which speeds up algae growth and softens the timber surface faster than a deck with a slight fall built in to shed water away from the house.
The fall is normally built into the joist or bearer heights during construction, angled away from any adjoining wall or door threshold, rather than relying on the boards themselves to slope.
Getting the fall direction right at the design stage also avoids water pooling against a house wall, which risks damp ingress at the threshold over time.
Low-voltage lighting built into decking
Recessed low-voltage deck lights, usually built into the timber before boards are laid, extend a deck's usable hours into the evening without the trip hazard of surface-mounted fittings.
Cable routes need planning before the substructure is closed in, since retrofitting lighting into a finished deck usually means lifting boards rather than a simple add-on.
Outdoor low-voltage systems still need a transformer and cabling installed to the relevant electrical safety standard, even though the voltage itself is lower than mains.
Boundary treatments for flats and maisonettes
