Concrete, posts and panels are heavy, and a site with only a narrow side return or no vehicle access changes how a job is priced and sequenced — materials sometimes have to be carried through rather than dropped at the boundary.
On a commercial yard the opposite problem applies: keeping a working site operational around a delivery of steel palisade or mesh panels needs a delivery and storage plan agreed before the first post goes in.

Building regulations guidance for steps in a domestic setting generally favours risers in the range of roughly 150-170mm with adequate going (tread depth), though garden steps have more flexibility than an internal staircase.
Where a deck sits at a height that doesn't divide evenly into consistent risers, it's better to adjust the deck height slightly at the design stage than to build one oddly-sized step to make up the difference.
The highway 1m rule in practice
The 1m permitted development limit applies to any boundary that fronts a highway used by vehicular traffic, which in practice includes most adopted roads and many unadopted estate roads that carry regular car use, not just classified A and B roads.

Where the shared drive is used by refuse collection or emergency services, checking minimum clear widths and turning circles with the council or fire service before fitting a gate avoids a structure that later has to be removed.
CDM Regulations and domestic clients
The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 apply even to domestic projects like fencing and decking, though in a domestic setting the client's specific duties are normally treated as passed to the contractor unless otherwise agreed.
In practice this means the appointed contractor typically takes on responsibility for managing health and safety on the project, rather than the homeowner personally.
It's still reasonable for a homeowner to ask how a contractor manages site safety, particularly on larger multi-trade projects involving several contractors on the same domestic site.
Spirit level versus laser level for checking a run
A spirit level checks a single post is plumb and a single panel is level, but confirming that an entire run stays level or follows a consistent fall over 20 or 30 metres is far quicker and more reliable with a rotating laser level set at a fixed height.
On a stepped run, a laser also makes it straightforward to confirm each step drops by the same consistent amount rather than checking each post in isolation and hoping the cumulative effect looks even.
A basic spirit level remains the more practical tool for quick checks during a single post's installation, since setting up a laser for every individual post would slow the job without adding useful accuracy at that scale.
Clearing debris from a sliding gate track
Leaves, gravel and windblown litter collect in a ground-level sliding gate track over time, and a build-up is one of the most common reasons a gate that used to run smoothly starts binding or stalling partway along its travel.
Regular clearing of the track, particularly after autumn leaf fall or after a period of wind, prevents debris from being repeatedly crushed into the track and becoming harder to remove.
Assessing whether a removed panel's fixings are reusable
When a panel is lifted out to replace a post behind it, the panel's own clips, brackets or nails are sometimes still serviceable and can be reused, but corroded or bent fixings are worth replacing at the same time rather than refitting a panel with worn hardware.

This is less about the fence itself and more about making sure existing cover for storm or accidental damage properly reflects what's actually there.
Checking a policy's terms, or simply asking the insurer, before or after significant boundary work avoids an unpleasant surprise if a claim is ever needed.
Corner visibility splays affecting fence height specifically
Some corner plots have a specific visibility splay condition attached to their planning history that limits fence, hedge or wall height at the junction to well below the normal 1m road-facing limit.
This is separate from the general permitted development height rule and takes precedence where it applies, since it's usually tied to road safety at a specific junction.
Checking the property's planning history for this kind of condition before fencing a corner plot boundary avoids building something that later needs cutting back.
Capping rails and rail theft
Timber capping rails and metal top rails both protect the fence line beneath them from weather, but an unsecured metal capping on a low-value run has occasionally been targeted for scrap, which is worth factoring in on an isolated boundary.
Fixing capping with concealed or tamper-resistant screws rather than exposed standard screws reduces how easily a section can be lifted off without cutting into the maintenance schedule.
Checking whether an existing post can be reused
A post that looks sound above ground can still have rotted through at the point where it meets the concrete, so a proper check means levering the post gently and looking for movement at the base, not just inspecting the visible timber.
Concrete posts rarely rot but can develop hairline cracks from impact or corroding internal reinforcement, which shows up as rust staining bleeding through the surface before the crack itself is obvious.
Reusing a post that fails a proper check to save a day's digging usually costs more later, since replacing one post in an otherwise finished run means disturbing the panels either side of it.
Gravel board rot and replacement
The gravel board takes the most ground contact and splashback of any timber component on the fence, so it's usually the first piece to need replacing regardless of how sound the panels or posts above it are.
Swapping a rotten timber gravel board for a concrete one at repair time removes that recurring failure point without needing to touch the panel above it.
