Where a residential street has marked parking bays, a resident or contractor may need to apply to the council to formally suspend a bay for the duration of a delivery or a working van.
Suspensions are usually charged per bay per day and typically need a few working days' notice, so they're worth arranging well ahead of a fencing or decking job rather than on the morning of delivery.
Parking in a suspended bay without paying the fee, or using a bay that hasn't been suspended at all, can result in a parking charge notice regardless of the reason for being there.

Old hinges, latches and, where a frame is beyond repair, the timber itself are removed and taken off site as part of the job, rather than left for the client to dispose of separately.

Temporary fencing while a permanent boundary is rebuilt
Removing an old boundary fence before the new one is built leaves a gap that matters for security, for keeping pets or children contained, and for site safety around an open excavation.
A simple temporary screen — netting on stakes, or hurdles wired together — bridges that gap without committing to a full second install, and is worth agreeing with the client if the job will span more than a day.
On a site backing onto a road, path or shared area, a temporary barrier around open post holes overnight is also a basic precaution against someone stepping into an unmarked hole in the dark.
Digging a post hole beside a mature root plate
Close to a mature tree, the first spade or auger pass often meets structural roots rather than clear soil, and cutting a root over roughly 25mm diameter can affect the tree's stability as well as its health.
Hand-digging with a spade and fork lets roots be worked around and exposed gradually, which an auger or mechanical borer can't do since it cuts through whatever's in its path without warning.
Where a root genuinely blocks the only sensible post position, moving the post sideways along the line by a short distance is almost always preferable to severing a major root to keep to the original spacing.
Fixing a post that has rotated in its concrete base
A post can twist within a slightly oversized or cracked footing without leaning, so the panels either side pull out of square even though the post still stands upright, which is easy to miss on a quick visual check.

C24 timber has been graded to a higher strength and stiffness threshold than C16, and is specified where a structural calculation demands it, such as a longer unsupported gate post span, rather than chosen purely by appearance.
Fencing timber is rarely strength-graded in the same formal way as construction timber, which is one reason gate posts subject to real structural calculation sometimes specify a graded section rather than standard fencing stock.
Checking for adjacent drainage runs before excavating
A land drain or perimeter drainage run laid to keep a garden from waterlogging is easy to miss during a routine dig, since it's often shallower and less obviously marked than a mains service.
Digging through one doesn't usually cause an immediate problem visible on the day, but it can quietly reintroduce a waterlogging issue the drain was originally installed to solve, sometimes not noticed until the following wet season.
Where a garden has a known history of standing water that was previously addressed with drainage work, it's worth asking the client what's down there before digging rather than finding out by breaking through a pipe.

Properties within a designated flood risk zone can be subject to additional requirements around solid boundary structures that might obstruct floodwater flow across the site.
A solid close-boarded fence can behave differently to a more open picket or post-and-rail design when it comes to how water moves through a garden during a flood event.
Where flood risk mapping shows a property is affected, checking with the local authority or Environment Agency for any relevant guidance is sensible before choosing a boundary style.
Timber choice for a long-lasting gate
A gate takes more repeated stress at its joints than a static fence panel ever does, so a denser hardwood section at the hinge stile holds up noticeably better over time than a standard softwood frame in the same position.
Full treatment penetration at the joints matters more on a gate than anywhere else on the boundary, since that's where moisture gets trapped.
Carrying out a final walk-round check before calling a job complete
A final check along the full run — hinges swinging freely, caps seated, fixings tight, gravel boards sitting flush — catches small issues that are quick to fix on the day but awkward to revisit once tools and materials have left site.
Checking gate latches and bolts actually engage properly under normal use, not just that they look fitted, avoids a callback for something that would have taken moments to adjust while still on site.
A brief look at the surrounding area — cleared spoil, protected surfaces returned to their original state, tools accounted for — is as much a part of finishing the job properly as the fence itself.
Fencing compared with a boundary wall
A masonry boundary wall generally costs more and takes longer to build than an equivalent length of timber fencing, but needs far less routine maintenance over its lifetime and can outlast several generations of fence replacement.
Walls also carry their own structural considerations — foundation depth, movement joints on longer runs, and retaining requirements on a sloping plot — that a fence largely avoids.
Mixing the two, a low wall topped with railings or a timber panel, is a common way to get some of a wall's permanence and kerb appeal without the full cost of a wall along an entire boundary.
Timber versus concrete gravel boards
A gravel board sits at the base of a fence panel to keep the panel itself clear of standing water and direct ground contact, which is where rot usually starts on an otherwise sound fence.
Timber gravel boards are cheaper and easier to match to a timber fence's finish, but need replacing more often than concrete boards, which resist rot indefinitely but can crack under impact and don't take a stain or paint finish as readily.
On a plot with poor drainage or a known damp problem, concrete gravel boards are usually the more economical long-term choice despite the higher initial cost.
Working around a soil vent pipe on the boundary
A soil vent pipe running up close to a boundary wall or fence line needs clearance to stay serviceable and to avoid trapping odours or condensation against the timber.
Where a fence panel would otherwise sit directly against the pipe, a narrow gap or a purpose-cut notch in the panel or gravel board keeps the pipe accessible without leaving a large unsightly space either side.
Fixing a post too close to a vent pipe can also make future pipe repairs or clearance rodding awkward, so the post position is usually set slightly back from the pipe run rather than tight against it.
Frost heave in shallow footings
A post base set too shallow, or poured in ground that later saturates, can be lifted slightly by frost heave as ice forms and expands beneath it, then settles unevenly once it thaws.
This is most noticeable on posts set less than the recommended depth for their height, where the concrete base itself sits within the top layer of ground most affected by winter freezing.
Once a post has heaved even a few millimetres out of true, the movement tends to repeat each winter, which is why it is worth digging to the depth appropriate for the post height rather than the minimum that will stand up in summer.
Use classes for ground-contact timber
Treated timber is graded into use classes according to how much moisture and ground contact it's expected to face, and specifying the wrong class for the job is a common cause of premature rot that isn't obvious until years later.
Use Class 3 covers above-ground timber exposed to the weather, such as boards and rails; Use Class 4 covers timber in direct or near-permanent ground contact, which is what posts and gravel boards should be specified to, not Use Class 3 stock used because it's cheaper or more available.
A supplier's treatment certificate should state the use class achieved, and it's worth asking for it on any job where posts are the expensive, hard-to-replace component of the run.
Freeholder consent for leasehold flats
Where a garden or yard is demised under a long lease rather than owned outright, the lease itself often requires the freeholder's written consent before any structural alteration, and a new fence, wall or gate can count as an alteration even in a small private yard.
Some leases route this through a managing agent who needs formal notice and a fee before works start, and skipping that step can technically breach the lease even where the work itself is uncontroversial.
It's worth reading the relevant clause of the lease, or asking the managing agent directly, rather than assuming that owning the flat gives unrestricted rights over its garden boundary.
Galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals
Galvanic corrosion occurs when two dissimilar metals are in direct contact in the presence of moisture, with the less noble metal corroding preferentially as electrons flow between the two through the electrolyte formed by the damp.
Aluminium fixed directly to steel, or stainless steel fixings used with certain aluminium alloys, are a commonly cited combination worth checking, since the galvanic reaction can accelerate corrosion of the aluminium component well beyond what it would experience alone.
Isolating dissimilar metals with a plastic washer, sleeve or compatible coating breaks the direct contact and largely prevents the reaction, which is a standard detail on aluminium gate fittings using steel fixings.
Hanging post size versus gate weight
A hanging post has to be sized to the weight and length of the gate it carries, not to match the rest of the fence line — an undersized post on a heavy double gate will lean or twist over time even with sound hinges.
We check post section and depth against the specific gate before a repair simply re-hangs the same gate onto the same undersized post.
Diagnosing squeaks and creaks in gate hardware
A squeak or creak from a gate is almost always dry friction at a hinge pin, pivot or roller rather than a structural fault, and it's worth locating the exact source by working the gate slowly through its swing rather than assuming which hinge is responsible.
Cleaning out old, dirt-laden grease before applying fresh lubricant gives a longer-lasting fix than simply oiling over grit that's already worked into the bearing surface.
Boundaries against a watercourse and riparian basics
A property boundary running along a stream, brook or ditch usually carries riparian responsibilities regardless of who technically owns the fence, including keeping the watercourse clear of obstruction and not doing anything that would worsen flood risk downstream.
Fence posts set close to a watercourse bank should avoid undermining or destabilising the bank itself, and in many cases installing anything within a set distance of the top of the bank needs consent from the relevant flood or drainage authority.
Ground immediately alongside a watercourse is also more likely to be periodically saturated or subject to erosion, which should factor into post depth and material choice on that section.
