Aligning a drop bolt on double gates
A drop bolt on the leading edge of one leaf of a double gate needs a matching socket set into the ground or a fixed plate below it, and that socket has to be positioned after the gates are hung and checked closed, not marked out in advance from a plan.
Ground movement or a slight settling of the gate posts over the following months can throw the bolt out of alignment with its socket, which is why some installers set the socket in a slightly oversized recess rather than a tight-fitting hole.
Where the ground under the gate is loose gravel or soft earth, a concrete socket set flush with the surface holds alignment far better over time than a bolt simply pushed into bare ground.
Mesh apertures and wire gauge
A mesh fence's aperture, the size of each gap between wires, and its wire gauge, the wire's diameter, together determine how much it restricts sightlines, resists intrusion and how heavy the finished panel is.
A smaller aperture with a heavier gauge wire gives better security and a more solid appearance, but adds weight and wind load that the supporting posts and foundations need to be sized for.
Wire gauge is often expressed in millimetres in current UK specifications rather than the older imperial standard wire gauge numbers, and mixing the two systems when comparing products can lead to ordering the wrong strength mesh.
Strimmer damage at the fence-to-lawn edge
Repeated strimming right up against the base of gravel boards or post bases scars the timber surface and removes any protective coating exactly at the point most exposed to ground moisture.
A mowing strip of paving or gravel along the base of the fence line removes the need to strim that close, protecting both the timber finish and the lawn edge itself.
This is a small design addition worth suggesting on new installs, since the damage it prevents is otherwise mistaken for premature timber failure rather than a maintenance habit.
Embodied carbon in timber versus composite materials
Timber sequesters carbon as it grows and, if sourced from a well-managed forest, typically carries a lower embodied carbon footprint through manufacture than composite products that incorporate manufactured polymer alongside recycled wood fibre.
Composite products often use recycled plastic content, which offsets some of their footprint by diverting material from landfill, but the manufacturing energy involved in producing the composite board itself is generally higher than sawing and treating solid timber.
Comparing the two fairly also needs to account for service life, since a material lasting genuinely longer before replacement can offset a higher manufacturing footprint over the full life of the fence.
Incising for treatment penetration
Incising is the process of pressing a pattern of small slits into a timber's surface before pressure treatment, breaking through the outer layer so preservative can reach further into the wood than it otherwise would.
It's most relevant on species like spruce and whitewood, which have a dense, resistant heartwood-adjacent layer that untreated slits would leave largely unprotected, whereas naturally permeable species such as pine sapwood rarely need it.
The trade-off is a slightly roughened surface texture with visible slit marks, which is a fair exchange for genuine depth of penetration rather than a treatment that sits mostly on the surface.
Kiln-dried versus green timber movement
Green (wet, unseasoned) timber is cheaper and easier to nail without splitting, but it shrinks noticeably as it dries in situ, which opens gaps between overlapping boards and can loosen fixings within the first year.
Kiln-dried timber has already lost most of that moisture before it reaches site, so it holds its dimensions far better once fixed, at a higher material cost.
Closeboard fencing traditionally tolerates green feather-edge boards reasonably well because the overlap absorbs some shrinkage, but a tight tongue-and-groove or slatted panel is far less forgiving and benefits from kiln-dried stock.
