Where a wall is engineering brick specifically because it's load-bearing or below damp-proof course, it's worth checking that the fixing depth and pattern doesn't compromise the wall's structural role before drilling a run of holes into it.
Hardwood options for gates
Gates take more racking stress than a fixed fence panel, opening and closing on a single edge, which is why hardwoods such as oak or iroko are often specified for gates even where the adjoining fence is softwood.
Oak's natural durability means it can be left untreated and will weather to silver-grey, but it also moves seasonally and can stain surrounding masonry with tannin run-off in wet weather, which is worth flagging before it's fitted next to a pale render or paving.
Hardwood gate frames are usually built with mortice-and-tenon joints rather than the simple nailed or bracketed joints acceptable on a softwood panel, since the joint has to resist years of racking without loosening.
Dog damage and low-level reinforcement
Repeated pushing, chewing or digging by a dog tends to damage the lowest section of a fence first, since that's the section within reach and the section closest to any dug-out gap at ground level.
Reinforcing the repaired section with a mesh liner or a kickboard behind the lower boards addresses the recurring cause rather than just replacing the damaged timber.
Post spacing on a run that doesn't divide evenly
Standard panels are usually 1.83m (6ft) wide, but very few boundary runs measure out as an exact multiple of that, so the layout has to absorb the remainder somewhere rather than pretend it isn't there.
The common approach is to split the shortfall across the two end bays so both are cut slightly narrower and roughly matched, rather than leaving one full-width bay and one very narrow offcut at a single end.

Mature trees close to a boundary do two things to a fence: their roots can heave a post out of true over several years, and if the tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order or sits in a conservation area, digging within its root protection area needs care and sometimes council sign-off.
Where roots are already present we'll usually hand-dig around them rather than auger through, and set the post slightly off the direct line if that avoids cutting a structural root.

Screw pull-out values in timber
A screw's resistance to being pulled straight out of timber depends on thread depth, shank diameter and the density of the timber it's driven into, with denser hardwoods offering significantly higher pull-out resistance than softwoods for the same screw.
Coarse-thread screws designed for softwood construction generally have deeper, wider-spaced threads than fine-thread screws intended for hardwood or metal, since softwood's lower density needs more thread engagement to achieve comparable grip.
Pre-drilling a pilot hole reduces the risk of splitting dense or knotty timber but also slightly reduces ultimate pull-out resistance compared with a screw self-tapping fully into undrilled timber, which is a trade-off worth balancing against the specific timber and screw.
Protecting an adjoining property while working a boundary corner
Work at a corner post often means standing tools, ladders or spoil temporarily on or very close to a neighbour's side of the boundary, which is worth agreeing in advance rather than assuming implied consent.
Where the corner adjoins a neighbour's planted border or a section of their own fence, photographing the condition before work starts gives both parties a clear reference if any question arises afterwards about pre-existing damage.
Finishing and clearing a corner section fully before moving along the rest of the run, rather than leaving it half-done for days, reduces the time any disruption to the neighbour's side is visible or ongoing.
Retrospective planning applications for boundary work
Where boundary work turns out to have needed planning permission that wasn't obtained, it's possible to apply retrospectively, though this carries the real risk of the council refusing and requiring the structure to be altered or removed.

Building control involvement typically means the wall's design needs to demonstrate adequate drainage behind it and sufficient strength to resist the retained ground, often requiring a structural engineer's calculations rather than a standard trade specification.

Slat gap ratios in screening fences

Full treatment penetration at the joints matters more on a gate than anywhere else on the boundary, since that's where moisture gets trapped.
Moss build-up on shaded paths beside a north boundary fence
A path or step running alongside a permanently shaded north-facing fence often develops moss faster than the same surface elsewhere in the garden, since the fence itself blocks low winter sun that would otherwise help the surface dry.
This isn't strictly a fence maintenance issue but is worth mentioning to clients, since a fence replacement project is often the moment a client is already thinking about that part of the garden and receptive to fixing a related slip hazard at the same time.
A lighter, more open fence design along that boundary, where privacy allows, can let in enough additional light to measurably reduce moss growth on the path beside it.
Use Class 4 versus Use Class 3 timber
The European use-class system grades timber by the exposure it's treated to withstand: Use Class 3 covers timber above ground but exposed to weather, such as capping or fascia boards, while Use Class 4 covers timber in ground contact or fresh water, such as posts.
A Use Class 4 post buried in soil needs a deeper, longer-lasting retention of preservative than a Use Class 3 rail bolted between two posts, because the ground contact zone stays damp for far longer than an exposed but well-drained horizontal timber.
Specifying the wrong class isn't always obvious at installation, since both can look identical when new, but it shows up years later as premature rot concentrated at ground level rather than along the whole length.
Board thickness and deflection
A thin board fixed across a wide unsupported span will visibly bow or deflect under its own weight or a light push long before it's anywhere near breaking, because deflection increases sharply as thickness decreases.
Doubling a board's thickness roughly increases its stiffness eightfold for the same span, which is why panel manufacturers specify a maximum bay width for a given board thickness rather than treating thickness as purely a durability choice.
On wider bays it's usually cheaper overall to add an intermediate rail or reduce the bay width than to over-specify board thickness across the whole run to compensate.
Vegetation growing through or over a shared fence
Plants growing from one garden through, over or against a shared fence — a spreading shrub, an overhanging branch, a self-seeded sapling in the fence line itself — sit in a grey area between garden maintenance and boundary structure that isn't always covered by a simple 'good neighbour' agreement.
A sapling that germinates directly against a post and is left to grow can eventually distort or crack the post as its trunk thickens, which is a slow-motion structural problem rather than a purely cosmetic one.
Flagging seedlings growing in or immediately against a fence line at an early stage, before root or trunk growth causes structural distortion, avoids a much larger repair later.
Bat and bird nesting season timing

Gates binding in winter
A gate that closes freely in summer but binds against its frame or post in winter is very often timber swelling from increased moisture rather than a hinge or frame fault, and easing the latch edge slightly is usually enough to fix it.

Working around a soil vent pipe on the boundary

Where a fence panel would otherwise sit directly against the pipe, a narrow gap or a purpose-cut notch in the panel or gravel board keeps the pipe accessible without leaving a large unsightly space either side.
Fixing a post too close to a vent pipe can also make future pipe repairs or clearance rodding awkward, so the post position is usually set slightly back from the pipe run rather than tight against it.
Boundary fencing between garden and agricultural land
Where a residential garden backs onto agricultural land, stock-proof fencing standards relevant to livestock containment may be a factor the adjoining farmer expects, separate from purely decorative garden fencing considerations.
Responsibility for maintaining this kind of boundary can be split differently to a typical suburban arrangement, sometimes reflecting historic agricultural tenancy agreements rather than standard residential conveyancing norms.
Checking with the adjoining landowner and the title documents together gives a fuller picture than assuming the same rules apply as between two ordinary garden neighbours.
Timber stain versus paint breathability
A translucent or semi-transparent stain generally remains vapour-permeable, allowing moisture that gets into the timber to escape back out again as the wood dries, which reduces the risk of trapped moisture driving rot.
Solid, opaque paint films are often less permeable, and a paint film that cracks or is breached can trap moisture behind it against the timber, sometimes accelerating localised decay compared with an unpainted equivalent.
Modern microporous exterior paints aim to combine paint's fuller colour coverage with a degree of vapour permeability, narrowing but not eliminating this trade-off between appearance and moisture management.
