Weld mesh is formed from crossed wires welded at each intersection, giving a uniform grid that's easy to cut to size and re-panel; expanded metal is slit and stretched from a single sheet, leaving no welds to fail and a diamond pattern that resists prising apart at a joint.
Expanded metal costs more per panel but suits higher-threat compounds where weld failure at a joint would be the obvious attack point; weld mesh remains the standard choice for everyday commercial and school boundaries.
Creosote and its substitutes
Traditional creosote, a tar-oil wood preservative, gives strong protection against rot and insects but is now restricted to professional and agricultural use in the UK following changes in chemical regulation, and isn't available for general retail sale.
Modern water-based and oil-based substitute preservatives aim to replicate creosote's protective performance without the same handling and environmental restrictions, though some traditionalists consider the older tar-oil formulations more effective on long-term exposed structural timber.
Fencing sold as 'creosoted' to the public today is typically treated with one of these substitute formulations rather than genuine creosote, since supply of the original product to non-professional users has been curtailed.
What insertion loss actually measures
Insertion loss is the difference in noise level at a given point before and after a barrier is installed, measured for that specific location and source rather than as a fixed property of the barrier alone.
The same barrier will show a different insertion loss figure at a first-floor window than at ground level in the same garden, because the geometry between source, barrier and listener changes with height.
Keeping a noise diary before specifying a barrier
A simple noise diary — noting when a noise occurs, roughly how loud it feels and what triggers it — gives a clearer picture of what a barrier needs to address than a general impression that a garden is noisy.
This kind of record helps focus the design on the specific times and sources that matter most, rather than specifying a barrier to an assumed constant noise that doesn't match the actual pattern of disturbance.
Wind loading on a solid acoustic screen
A solid, gap-free acoustic panel catches significantly more wind than an open fence of the same height, so bay spans are kept shorter and posts upsized on any run that's fully exposed to prevailing wind.
This matters most on an elevated plot or a boundary running the full length of a garden with nothing upwind to break the load.
Windbreak netting as an interim exposure measure
On a newly exposed plot, such as after a neighbouring hedge or building is removed, temporary windbreak netting fixed to the existing fence can reduce load on the structure while a longer-term solution like replanting or upgrading the fence itself is arranged.
This is a genuinely useful stop-gap rather than a permanent fix, since netting left up long-term degrades in UV and adds its own wind resistance once it starts to fray and catch more air than when new.
It buys time to plan a proper specification change rather than leaving a suddenly-exposed fence to fail before a permanent upgrade can be arranged.
Obstruction offences under the Highways Act
The Highways Act 1980 makes it an offence to obstruct a public highway, including the footway, without lawful authority, which is the underlying reason fencing, skips or materials on a pavement need proper authorisation.
This applies regardless of whether the obstruction is temporary for a delivery or intended as a permanent boundary feature encroaching onto highway land.
Where any part of planned boundary work might extend onto or over a public footway or verge, checking with the highway authority first avoids a straightforward enforcement issue later.
Salt-laden air and coastal-adjacent exposure
Gardens within a few miles of open coast, or on a plot regularly exposed to salt spray carried on strong onshore winds, see accelerated corrosion of standard fixings and hinges compared with an inland site.
Stainless steel or heavily galvanised fixings are worth the extra cost in these conditions, since standard zinc-plated screws and hinges can show surface rust within a single season.
Timber itself isn't usually damaged by salt exposure directly, but a finish applied over salt residue left on the surface after a storm won't bond as well as one applied to a clean, rinsed surface.
Acoustic barriers on a raised garden
A garden set above the level of an adjacent road or railway changes the geometry between source and listener, sometimes reducing the barrier height needed because the listener already sits some way above the noise source.
Conversely, a raised garden can also expose a ground-floor window at the source's own height while the fence line sits below, which needs checking rather than assuming height works purely in the garden's favour.
