Offcuts of pressure-treated fencing timber shouldn't be left lying in or used to edge a vegetable bed or fruit cage, since preservative can leach out of cut ends into adjacent soil over time.
Keeping offcuts on a hard surface or sheeting rather than directly on a border during the works avoids this becoming an issue even temporarily while the job is ongoing.
Where a client specifically wants to reuse leftover timber for raised beds, it's worth flagging that treated fencing stock isn't the right material for that purpose regardless of how convenient the offcuts seem.
Siberian larch as a fencing timber
Siberian larch grows slowly in a cold climate, which produces a dense, tight-grained timber with better natural durability than most fast-grown European softwoods, without needing pressure treatment in many applications.
It's noticeably harder to nail and screw without pre-drilling than typical treated pine, and a nail driven in at the wrong angle is more likely to split the board than sink cleanly.
Left unfinished it weathers to a silvery grey similar to cedar, though its higher density means it holds up somewhat better to knocks and general handling on site.
Latch types: Suffolk, ring, auto-latch, gravity
A Suffolk latch and a ring latch both use a thumb-operated lever to lift a bar out of a keep, while an auto-latch closes itself on contact and a gravity latch relies on weighted design to drop into place — each needs different striker alignment to work reliably.

Featherboard and closeboard panels are built with each board overlapping the next, and the direction of that overlap affects how well the panel sheds driven rain — the leading edge of each board should face the prevailing wind and rain direction so water runs off rather than being driven behind the board.
This is straightforward to get right at manufacture but is occasionally reversed on a bespoke or site-built run, which shows up over time as faster localised rot on the boards facing the wrong way for the local prevailing weather.
Checking overlap direction against the site's known prevailing wind is a small detail worth confirming before a bespoke run is built rather than assuming a standard orientation will suit every site.
Basic safety checks before starting a repair
Before any post is dug out or panel removed, checking the fence isn't currently under load from a leaning tree, a taut washing line or a climbing plant reduces the risk of something moving unexpectedly once a fixing is cut free.
Gloves and eye protection matter as much on a small repair as a full installation, since old nails, splintered timber and rusted wire fixings are common causes of minor injury on repair work specifically.
Sleeper edging and planters
Softwood landscape sleepers are pressure-treated to a ground-contact use class and are generally cheaper and more consistent in size than reclaimed hardwood railway sleepers, which vary in condition and may carry historic residues such as creosote unsuitable for areas near planting or seating.
Sleepers used for raised beds or low retaining edges are usually stacked and pinned with long timber screws or steel rebar driven through pre-drilled holes rather than simply stacked loose, since an unpinned stack can shift as the ground behind it settles.
Where a sleeper structure is also expected to retain a meaningful depth of soil rather than just edge a bed, it moves into proper retaining-wall territory with its own drainage and structural considerations.
Tree roots and Tree Preservation Orders

A practical approach on a full boundary is spraying the open panel faces for speed and finish, then finishing post tops, end grain and capping joints by hand with a brush.

A gate hinge post takes repeated leverage every time the gate swings, which loosens its footing faster than a plain fence post nearby carrying no such load, and it's a common early failure point on a boundary that includes a gate.
Reinforcing usually means a larger post section, a deeper footing, or bracing back into the adjoining fence run, rather than simply resetting the same post size that already proved inadequate for the load.
Gravel board material choices
A gravel board sits at the base of a panel fence to keep the panel itself clear of ground moisture and splashback, and is commonly available in treated timber, concrete or composite, each with different durability trade-offs at that most exposed position.
Timber gravel boards are the cheapest to replace individually but also the first component to rot, since they sit closest to damp ground and soil splash, while concrete gravel boards resist rot entirely but can crack under impact or ground movement.
Composite gravel boards split the difference, resisting moisture better than timber without concrete's brittleness, though they typically cost more than either alternative for the same length.
Protecting an adjoining property while working a boundary corner
Work at a corner post often means standing tools, ladders or spoil temporarily on or very close to a neighbour's side of the boundary, which is worth agreeing in advance rather than assuming implied consent.
Where the corner adjoins a neighbour's planted border or a section of their own fence, photographing the condition before work starts gives both parties a clear reference if any question arises afterwards about pre-existing damage.
Finishing and clearing a corner section fully before moving along the rest of the run, rather than leaving it half-done for days, reduces the time any disruption to the neighbour's side is visible or ongoing.

The gravel board takes the most ground contact and splashback of any timber component on the fence, so it's usually the first piece to need replacing regardless of how sound the panels or posts above it are.

Broken panels, snapped posts and old concrete are cleared and taken off site as standard on any repair, rather than left in the garden for the client to deal with separately.

A manhole or inspection chamber cover on or near the fence line has to stay accessible, since utility companies and drainage authorities retain a right to lift covers for maintenance regardless of what's built nearby.
The practical fix is usually to offset the nearest post to one side and let a shortened panel or gravel board span across above the cover, rather than boxing it in or fencing directly over it.
Where the chamber serves a shared drain, it's worth confirming with a neighbour or the water company which covers must stay clear before finalising post positions, since covering one by mistake can mean taking the fence apart again later.
