Taking level readings from one datum point at both ends and at intervals along the run, rather than only comparing each post to its immediate neighbour, reveals the true overall fall before panel and post heights are finalised.
This matters most for ordering materials in advance, since a run that turns out to need more steps or a longer rake than first estimated can mean extra cut panels or capping that weren't in the original take-off.

These standards aren't legally mandatory on a private domestic job in the way building regulations are, but they're the reference point used in commercial specifications, school and public sector tenders, and by insurers assessing whether a boundary structure was reasonably built.
Where a job is speculatively described as 'to British Standard', it's worth confirming which specific part of BS 1722 is meant, since the standard covers a wide family of very different fence types.
Where acoustic and privacy needs overlap
A solid acoustic barrier usually also delivers strong visual privacy as a side effect of its sealed, gap-free construction, even where privacy wasn't the original driver for the project.
Conversely, a fence chosen purely for privacy using a lighter overlap or slatted construction won't deliver much acoustic benefit, so it's worth being clear at the outset which of the two needs is actually the priority.
Quiet hours and noise considerations for works
Most local authorities publish informal guidance or byelaws on acceptable working hours for noisy construction activity, often something like weekday daytime hours with reduced or no work on Sundays.
While a single day of fence post digging rarely needs a formal noise permit of the kind larger construction sites require, persistent early or late working can still attract a noise complaint under general nuisance law.
Checking the council's standard hours guidance, and simply letting immediate neighbours know when noisier work like post drilling will happen, tends to avoid most complaints before they start.
Setting out a line over a sloping plot
On a slope, a string line pulled level between two posts of equal height will sit above the ground at one end and below it at the other, so setting out has to work from a boning rod or a laser level rather than the string alone.
The usual method is to fix the top and bottom posts first, establish the actual fall between them, then decide bay by bay whether intermediate posts step down in even drops or follow the ground continuously.
Getting this decision agreed before any post is concreted matters, because changing from a stepped to a raked layout partway along a run after posts are set means starting again.
Coordinating a dropped kerb with a new vehicle security gate
A new vehicle gate needs a dropped kerb or existing crossover in the right position before it's ordered, since a gate that opens onto a kerb face rather than a level crossover will scrape or jam on every use.
Where no dropped kerb exists, this is a highway authority matter separate from the fencing work itself and needs its own approval and lead time, which is worth flagging early so the gate installation isn't delayed waiting on it.
