Digging post holes and running a wheelbarrow route across an established lawn or border can do more visible damage to a garden than the fence work itself, particularly on wet ground where repeated foot traffic compacts soil and kills grass.
Boarding out a barrow route and working from a single access line rather than crossing beds repeatedly limits that damage, and cutting back or temporarily tying in shrubs near the boundary before work starts avoids snagging branches during panel removal.
Where mature planting sits right against an existing fence, it's worth discussing with the client whether some cutting back is acceptable before work starts rather than discovering on the day that access is blocked.
Gravel board material choices
A gravel board sits at the base of a panel fence to keep the panel itself clear of ground moisture and splashback, and is commonly available in treated timber, concrete or composite, each with different durability trade-offs at that most exposed position.
Timber gravel boards are the cheapest to replace individually but also the first component to rot, since they sit closest to damp ground and soil splash, while concrete gravel boards resist rot entirely but can crack under impact or ground movement.
Composite gravel boards split the difference, resisting moisture better than timber without concrete's brittleness, though they typically cost more than either alternative for the same length.
Cutting and resealing treated timber ends on site
Any cut made to pressure-treated timber on site exposes an untreated core at that face, since preservative penetration doesn't reach the centre of most sections, and that cut end is then the most vulnerable point on the whole piece.
Brushing a compatible end-grain preservative onto every site cut before the piece is fixed restores a working level of protection at minimal extra time, and is worth building into the cutting process rather than treated as optional.
Post tops cut to length on site are a common place this gets missed, since the cut is often made last, after the post is already concreted in, when it's easy to move on to the next post without going back to treat the cut.
Sapwood versus heartwood durability
Heartwood is the older, inner part of a tree trunk that's stopped conducting sap and often contains natural extractives that resist fungal decay, while sapwood is the outer, still-active layer with little inherent durability.
Species like oak and western red cedar owe much of their reputation for longevity to heartwood content, but any board can include a strip of pale sapwood at the edge that will rot faster than the rest of the same piece.
Because sawn fencing timber is rarely graded strictly by heartwood content, some sapwood is inevitable in most runs, which is exactly why preservative treatment matters even on naturally durable species.
Converted flats and shared bin storage
Houses converted into two or three flats often have a shared bin store or side passage boundary that wasn't part of the original single-dwelling fence layout, and responsibility for repair can be unclear where the freeholder retains the passage but individual flats use it daily.
A gate onto a shared bin store needs to be wide enough for wheelie bins to pass without lifting them over a threshold, and a self-closing latch is worth specifying so the gate isn't left open between collections.
