Self-closing spring hinges and tension setting
A self-closing spring hinge pulls a gate shut automatically after use, which matters where a gate must not be left open — around a pool, a road-facing boundary or a play area — but the spring tension needs setting so the gate closes fully without slamming.
Tension that's too light leaves the gate ajar in a headwind; tension that's too strong accelerates wear on the latch and keep from repeated hard closing.
Composite thermal expansion
Wood-plastic composite boards expand and contract with temperature considerably more than solid timber, since the polymer content responds more to heat than wood fibre does on its own.

Handling older timber treated with preservatives no longer in use
Timber treated with older preservative formulations that have since been withdrawn or restricted can still be present in fences installed some years ago, and cutting or sanding that timber during a repair can release different residues than modern treated timber would.
Where a fence is old enough that its original treatment is uncertain, working with good ventilation, gloves and dust control, and disposing of offcuts as general waste rather than burning them, is the sensible default.
Boundary ownership evidence and T-marks
A 'T' mark on a title plan, pointing inward from the boundary line towards a particular plot, is the traditional (though not universal) convention indicating that plot owns and is responsible for that boundary structure.
Where both sides of a boundary carry a T, or neither does, the deeds are silent and ownership defaults to whatever can be evidenced by other means — old photographs, the position of fence posts, or long-standing maintenance history.
T-marks aren't a legal guarantee and can be missing or wrong on older plans, so where a boundary is disputed it's worth treating the mark as a starting point for discussion rather than conclusive proof.
Hinge screw pull-out and through-bolting
Screws pulling out of a timber hinge post is one of the most common gate faults, usually caused by repeated leverage working the fixing loose in the grain over time rather than a single overload event.
Through-bolting the hinge with a coach bolt and washer plate on the far side of the post gives a mechanical fixing that doesn't rely on the timber's grip the way a screw does.
Picket fence styles and spacing
Picket fencing trades privacy for a lower, more open boundary, which suits front gardens where sightlines to the street and a welcoming appearance matter more than screening.
Picket spacing is a genuine design choice — narrower gaps look more traditional and offer a bit more containment for small pets, while wider spacing uses less timber and lets more light and air through a planted border behind it.
Because picket fencing is low, it rarely needs the same post depth as a taller closeboard run, though corner and gate posts still need proper concrete footings regardless of the fence's height.
Cantilever sliding gate basics
A cantilever sliding gate has no ground track and instead balances on internal rollers running along a buried or surface-mounted beam, avoiding the debris problems of a ground-track design but needing a longer counterbalanced section behind the opening.
This type is more common on wider commercial or rural openings than standard domestic driveways because of the extra length needed either side of the gap.
Matching materials on a part-run repair
Where one or two panels need replacing, we match the existing profile and height as closely as current stock allows, and we're upfront if an older or discontinued profile can't be matched exactly rather than pretending it can.
Concrete gravel boards are often worth fitting in place of the original timber ones at repair time, since they take the brunt of ground moisture that caused the original failure.
Aluminium extrusion profiles
Aluminium fencing and gate components are typically formed by extrusion, forcing heated aluminium billet through a shaped die to produce a continuous profile with a consistent cross-section, which allows complex hollow or ribbed shapes not practical in sawn timber or rolled steel.
Extruded profiles are usually finished with an anodised or powder-coated surface, since bare aluminium forms a natural oxide layer that resists corrosion well but can look dull and inconsistent if left unfinished.
Aluminium's lower strength relative to steel for a given section size means extruded profiles are often designed with internal ribbing or a boxed cross-section to achieve adequate rigidity without excessive material thickness.
Concreting a hanging post deeper than the run
Because the hanging post carries more leverage than a standard line post, it's often set deeper into the ground and into a larger concrete base than the rest of the boundary, even where the fence posts either side are set to a standard depth.
Skipping this extra depth on the hanging post specifically is a common reason a gate post leans within a few years while the rest of the run stays sound.
Sequencing a fence alongside window replacement works
Where both a boundary barrier and window upgrades are planned, doing the fence first can mean a temporary improvement is felt sooner, while doing the windows first addresses noise transmission through the fabric that a fence never reaches.
There's no single correct order, but agreeing it in advance based on which noise path is currently causing the most disturbance avoids spending on one improvement before establishing whether the other would have mattered more.
