Appearance from both sides
A heavier acoustic fence often has a different appearance on each face depending on which skin is presented outward, so it's worth agreeing with a neighbour which side gets the finished face where the boundary is shared.
Where both sides need to look presentable, a symmetrical double-skin build avoids one side being left with a plainer structural face.
Historic ha-ha and ditch boundaries
Some older rural and semi-rural Hertfordshire properties retain a ha-ha — a sunken ditch-and-wall boundary designed to keep a view open while still containing livestock — rather than a conventional fence line.
Where a ha-ha exists on a historic estate boundary, it's sometimes a designated heritage feature in its own right, in which case altering or fencing over it needs the same care as any other listed landscape feature.
More often a ditch boundary is simply a drainage feature rather than a heritage one, in which case a fence set back from the ditch edge, rather than spanning it, avoids undermining the bank.
Leylandii hedges and root competition near posts
A mature leylandii hedge planted close to a boundary develops a dense, shallow root mat that competes directly with a post base for space and moisture, often making standard post-hole digging difficult without cutting through live roots.
Leylandii also draws a large amount of water from the surrounding soil in summer, which can locally dry and shrink clay soil right along the fence line even where the wider garden isn't especially exposed.
Where a hedge is being kept, offsetting posts slightly from the direct root zone, or hand-digging around larger roots rather than augering through them, extends post life without needing to remove established planting.
Lifetime comparison of hedging and fencing as a boundary
A well-established hedge can outlast several generations of timber fencing with no post replacement or re-treatment cycle, but it needs regular cutting to stay within bounds and takes several years to reach an effective screening height from new planting.
A fence gives an immediate, defined boundary and predictable height but carries an ongoing maintenance and eventual replacement cost that a mature hedge doesn't.
Many gardens end up with a mixed solution — a fence for the immediate boundary definition with hedging planted alongside it to soften the appearance and eventually take over some of the screening role.
CDM Regulations and domestic clients
The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 apply even to domestic projects like fencing and decking, though in a domestic setting the client's specific duties are normally treated as passed to the contractor unless otherwise agreed.
In practice this means the appointed contractor typically takes on responsibility for managing health and safety on the project, rather than the homeowner personally.
It's still reasonable for a homeowner to ask how a contractor manages site safety, particularly on larger multi-trade projects involving several contractors on the same domestic site.
Matching paint or stain colour to an existing scheme
Replacing or refinishing a single gate on a property with an established fence or gate colour scheme needs the new finish matched as closely as possible, since a slightly different tone stands out far more on a single gate than it would across a whole run of fencing.
Weathering of the existing scheme also needs accounting for, since a colour matched to a faded existing finish can look mismatched again once the new work weathers at a different rate.
Thermally modified timber
Thermal modification heats timber to high temperatures in a low-oxygen environment, which alters its cell structure to reduce moisture absorption and improve decay resistance without adding any chemical preservative.
The process also darkens the timber throughout its thickness, which means a scratch or cut face shows a similar colour to the surface rather than exposing paler untreated wood underneath.
The heat treatment reduces the timber's flexural strength somewhat, so thermally modified timber is more commonly specified for cladding and decorative boarding than for load-bearing posts and rails.
Wind loading on exposed runs
A fence on an open, elevated or unsheltered boundary — a plateau, a field edge, or a long unbroken run with no buildings breaking the wind — takes a real structural load that a sheltered suburban garden never sees.
Standard 75x75mm posts and full-height solid panels are the combination most likely to fail here; heavier posts, shorter bays between them, and a slatted or louvred profile that lets some wind through all reduce the load rather than fighting it head-on.
It's a specification decision made at quote stage, not something to retrofit after the first panel goes over in a storm.
Salt-laden air and coastal-adjacent exposure
Gardens within a few miles of open coast, or on a plot regularly exposed to salt spray carried on strong onshore winds, see accelerated corrosion of standard fixings and hinges compared with an inland site.
Stainless steel or heavily galvanised fixings are worth the extra cost in these conditions, since standard zinc-plated screws and hinges can show surface rust within a single season.
Timber itself isn't usually damaged by salt exposure directly, but a finish applied over salt residue left on the surface after a storm won't bond as well as one applied to a clean, rinsed surface.
Dry-mix versus wet-mix concrete for post bases
A dry mix — post-fixing concrete poured dry into the hole around a braced post and left to draw moisture from the surrounding ground — sets over a day or two and suits smaller domestic posts in reasonably moist soil.
A wet mix, gauged and mixed with water before placing, gives more control over strength and is generally preferred for larger posts, gate posts under lateral load, or very dry, free-draining ground where a dry mix may not draw enough moisture to cure properly.
Wet mix also allows proper tamping to remove air pockets around the post, which a dry mix poured in stages can't achieve to the same degree.
Diagnosing a fence problem before quoting
A repair quote starts with identifying which of the usual failure points is actually responsible — post, panel, gravel board or a full run — because pricing a full replacement for what's actually a single post repair costs the client far more than necessary.
