Decking raised more than around 600mm above the ground typically needs a balustrade under Building Regulations Part K, with baluster gaps narrow enough that a 100mm sphere can't pass through, to stop a child slipping between rails.
Handrail height and the strength of the newel post fixings both matter more on a raised structure than a ground-level deck, since the loads involved in someone leaning on a rail are higher than most people assume.
Steps down from a raised deck need their own handrail treatment where the rise is significant, and non-slip tread nosing is worth specifying for anywhere used year-round.
Panel weight per square metre as a spec figure
Acoustic panels are specified partly by their weight per square metre, since that figure correlates closely with how much sound the panel blocks, more so than its stated thickness or its outward appearance.
Two panels of the same overall dimensions can differ noticeably in acoustic performance if their core density or facing material gives them different weights per square metre, which is why the figure is checked rather than assumed.
Matching new post heights into an existing run
Replacing a single failed post partway along an established run means matching its height and the position of any mortices exactly to its neighbours, since posts that are even 20-30mm out throw the top line of the whole run visibly off level.
Where the ground has settled unevenly along the run since it was first built, matching height to the immediate neighbouring posts rather than to a theoretical original level usually gives a better visual result.
It's worth checking the existing posts' actual spacing before ordering a replacement panel, since older or imperial-measured runs sometimes used spacing that doesn't match a modern metric panel exactly.
Sheeting plants and borders during fencing works
Established shrubs and borders close to a fence line are easily damaged by dropped tools, spoil heaps or simply being walked over repeatedly during a multi-day job, so temporary boards or breathable sheeting laid over beds reduces incidental damage.
Concrete dust and cement splash can scorch foliage if it settles on leaves and isn't rinsed off promptly, which is worth flagging before mixing starts next to a prized border.
Where a plant genuinely sits in the way of a post position, agreeing with the client in advance whether it's moved, worked around, or the post offset avoids an awkward decision made on the spot mid-dig.
Post depth as a ratio of height above ground
A common rule of thumb is that roughly a third to a quarter of a post's total length should be in the ground, so a post standing 1.5m proud typically needs somewhere in the region of 500-600mm of burial depth depending on soil and loading.
Taller fences, gate posts, and posts on exposed or poorly-draining ground all push toward the deeper end of that range, since the leverage on a buried post increases with height above ground far more than it does with depth.
Skimping depth to save digging time is one of the most common causes of a post working loose within its first few winters, well before the timber itself shows any sign of failing.
Closeboard and feather-edge construction
Closeboard fencing is built from overlapping feather-edge boards nailed vertically to horizontal arris rails, each board tapered so the thick edge overlaps the thin edge of its neighbour and sheds water outward.
That overlap is what gives closeboard its strength and privacy compared with a pre-made panel — there's no single failure point, so a split board can be replaced individually without dismantling the run.
The trade-off is labour: it's built on site board by board rather than lifted into place, so it costs more in time than a lap panel of the same length.
What a basic noise assessment covers
A basic noise assessment for a fencing job typically identifies the dominant source, its approximate direction and height, and the times it's most active, rather than producing a full technical acoustic report.
That level of assessment is usually enough to size and position a domestic barrier sensibly, while a more detailed instrumented survey is a separate undertaking usually reserved for planning applications or formal noise complaints.
Fence panels built around a recessed bin store
A bin store built into or against a fence line needs its own ventilation gaps, since enclosed bin storage without airflow concentrates moisture and odour against the adjoining fence panels far more than open storage would.
The panel section forming the back or side of a bin store also takes more direct contact wear — bins being wheeled in and out, lids catching the timber — than the rest of the run, so a slightly more robust board or a protective kick panel at the contact height extends its life.
These wear patterns are worth designing for at the outset rather than treating the bin store section as identical to the rest of the boundary run.
Post cap material and function
A post cap's primary function is shedding rainwater away from the post's end grain, which is the most absorbent and vulnerable part of a timber post, rather than being purely decorative.
A pyramid or bevelled profile sheds water faster than a flat cap, reducing the time water sits pooled on the timber surface after rain, which matters more on a flat-topped post than people often assume.
Metal, plastic and timber caps all achieve the same water-shedding function to varying degrees, but a cracked or ill-fitting cap that lets water track down between the cap and the post can trap moisture worse than no cap at all.
Storm damage triage
After a storm, triage prioritises anything posing an immediate hazard — a fence leaning over a path, a snapped post near a driveway — ahead of cosmetic damage further along the same run.
A wider survey of the whole boundary is worth doing at the same visit, since storm stress often weakens bays that haven't visibly failed yet but are more likely to fail in the next event.
