How a security survey is carried out
A security survey walks the whole perimeter, not just the section that prompted the enquiry — low runs, blind corners and gate junctions elsewhere on the boundary are usually the actual weak point, even when the call came in about one obviously damaged section.
We note sightlines from the street and from within the property, because a fence that blocks a view outward can work against security as easily as a low fence works against it from the other side.
Palisade pale profiles: D-section versus W-section
D-section pales have a rounded face that offers less finger and foot grip than a flat pale, while W-section pales fold the steel into a shallow trough shape that resists bending under a lever without adding weight.
W-section is the more common choice on a taller or higher-security run because the fold adds stiffness across the pale's width, whereas D-section is often reserved for lower, more decorative palisade work.
Party wall notices and communication
The Party Wall etc. Act 1996 covers work to a shared wall or excavation near a neighbour's foundations, and while an ordinary timber fence on a boundary line usually falls outside it, a new masonry boundary wall built astride the line, or deep post holes close to a neighbour's foundations, can bring it into play.
Where the Act applies, formal written notice is required before work starts, giving the neighbour a defined period to consent or dissent, and proceeding without notice risks an injunction even on otherwise straightforward work.
Even where the Act doesn't strictly apply, a simple letter or conversation confirming line, height and access before work starts avoids most of the disputes that end up needing formal resolution.
Tree proximity and root-safe post positions
Digging a post hole through a tree's root protection area can damage roots enough to destabilise the tree or trigger a preservation order breach, so post positions are offset or moved to hand-dug, narrower holes where a root is found.
A boundary running close to a protected tree is checked against its root spread before any layout is finalised, rather than adjusted only once digging hits a problem.
Aluminium extrusion profiles
Aluminium fencing and gate components are typically formed by extrusion, forcing heated aluminium billet through a shaped die to produce a continuous profile with a consistent cross-section, which allows complex hollow or ribbed shapes not practical in sawn timber or rolled steel.
Extruded profiles are usually finished with an anodised or powder-coated surface, since bare aluminium forms a natural oxide layer that resists corrosion well but can look dull and inconsistent if left unfinished.
Aluminium's lower strength relative to steel for a given section size means extruded profiles are often designed with internal ribbing or a boxed cross-section to achieve adequate rigidity without excessive material thickness.
Mesh tensioning on a chain-link or weld-mesh run
Mesh that's fitted slack sags between posts and can be pulled or climbed more easily, so a straining wire and turnbuckle at each end of a run tension the mesh evenly before it's clipped or tied to the line wires.
Re-tensioning is a routine maintenance task on an older mesh run, since posts settling slightly or ground movement over a season will slacken a mesh that was originally taut.
Visibility splays on corner plots and driveways
Corner plots and driveways onto a road often have a highway visibility splay — a triangular zone near the junction — where boundary height is restricted so drivers and pedestrians can see each other clearly.
These restrictions are usually lower than the standard 1m front-boundary limit and are enforced by the highway authority rather than just general planning policy, so it's worth checking with the council for any plot near a junction or driveway crossing a footway.
Open railings or low planting within a visibility splay are common solutions where some boundary definition is still wanted without blocking sightlines.
Recycled mixed-plastic lumber composition
Recycled plastic lumber differs from wood-plastic composite in that it's typically made entirely from reprocessed plastic waste with no wood fibre content, giving it complete immunity to rot and insect attack but a distinctly plastic rather than timber-like appearance.
Because it contains no wood fibre, it doesn't absorb moisture in the way composite or timber boards do, but it's also generally more flexible and prone to visible sagging over a wide unsupported span unless internally reinforced.
It's more commonly specified for ground-contact components like gravel boards and low retaining edges, where rot resistance matters most, than for larger structural fencing elements.
Planed versus sawn timber faces
Sawn timber retains the rough, slightly fibrous surface left by the mill saw, which holds paint and stain better initially but can also hold moisture and dirt in the surface fibres for longer after rain.
Planed, or PAR (planed all round), timber has a smooth, machined finish that looks tidier and is more pleasant to handle, but its closed surface can mean stain sits on top rather than soaking in, needing more frequent reapplication.
Fencing components are commonly specified as sawn for structural parts like posts and rails and planed for visible features like capping, reflecting the balance between weathering performance and finished appearance.
