Tamper-proof fixings and shear-nut bolts
Standard hex-head bolts can be undone with a spanner from outside a compound, so security runs use shear-nut or one-way bolts that snap the head off once torqued, leaving nothing for a tool to grip.
These are fitted at pale-to-rail junctions and on any panel that could otherwise be unbolted from outside the line, and they cost little more than standard fixings for a meaningful gain in tamper resistance.
Delivery access and material drop-off
Fencing materials are heavy and awkward rather than especially bulky individually, but a full job's worth of posts, panels and gravel boards still needs a genuine drop-off point close to the work area rather than a kerbside stack carried the full plot length.
On restricted streets, agreeing a specific delivery slot with the supplier avoids a lorry blocking a road during school run or peak hours, which is often the point neighbours complain about a job rather than the noise of the work itself.
Where a driveway can take a small vehicle, checking headroom and turning space in advance saves a delivery being refused on the day and materials having to be hand-carried instead.
Foundation depth for heavier panels
A heavier acoustic panel needs a deeper and often wider post foundation than a standard fence panel of the same height, since both the static weight and the increased wind load have to be resisted by the base.
Skimping on foundation depth to save time on a heavy panel run is a common cause of leaning posts within the first couple of seasons.
Buried rubble and old foundations
Gardens that once held an outbuilding, air-raid shelter or earlier boundary wall often still have its foundation strip sitting just below turf level, invisible until an auger or spade hits it.
A shallow concrete strip footing crossing the fence line usually needs breaking out locally rather than working around it, since a post can't be reliably set on top of a narrow buried footing.
Where old foundations run the length of a boundary, it's worth probing the full run before quoting rather than assuming one trial hole represents the whole job.
Laminated engineered timber posts
Laminated posts are built up from several thinner timber sections glued face to face under pressure, which can even out natural defects like knots across the section and produce a straighter, more dimensionally stable post than a single sawn piece of the same size.
Because the lamination process distributes any given defect across a smaller proportion of the overall section, a laminated post is generally less likely to fail suddenly at a single knot or grain irregularity than solid sawn timber.
The adhesive bond line itself becomes a potential weak point if it's exposed to sustained moisture without an appropriate exterior-rated glue, so laminated posts intended for outdoor use need adhesives specifically rated for damp exposure rather than interior-grade bonding.
Fixing classes for bolt-down base plates
Anchor fixings for base plates are classed by their approved use in cracked or uncracked concrete, and a fixing rated only for uncracked concrete can under-perform badly if used on an older slab that's already showing hairline cracking.
The manufacturer's technical data sheet gives pull-out and shear values for a specific concrete grade and thickness, and these figures are checked against the actual slab on site rather than assumed from a general spec sheet.
Levelling ground before building a decking substructure
A decking frame built over uneven ground without first levelling or terracing the site ends up with support posts of wildly inconsistent length, which is harder to get right and more prone to individual post settlement than a site graded roughly level first.
Removing turf and topsoil under the deck footprint rather than building over it also reduces the organic material that would otherwise decompose and settle unevenly under the structure.
Where the ground has a genuine and significant fall, working out whether to terrace the ground itself or simply vary support post heights is a decision made before any joists are cut, since it changes the whole substructure design.
Party fence wall versus an ordinary boundary fence
A 'party fence wall' has a specific meaning under the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 — a structure that stands astride the boundary line, jointly used by both properties, which is distinct from a garden fence panel that simply happens to mark a boundary.
Most timber panel fencing sits on one owner's land and isn't a party structure in that legal sense, even where it visually marks the boundary line.
Genuine party wall situations are more likely with masonry garden walls straddling the line, and those can bring the Act's notice procedures into play, which is worth checking before work starts.
Trading off fence height against site visibility from outside
Increasing a boundary's height improves resistance to climbing but also reduces visibility into the site from the street, which can work against security by giving an intruder who does get over the fence more concealment once inside.
A part-solid, part-mesh design, or a solid lower section topped with an open mesh upper section, is one way to gain height without losing all visibility, balancing the climbing deterrent against the loss of natural surveillance from passers-by.
