Generator and plant screening
Screening a generator or fixed mechanical plant follows the same line-of-sight and mass principles as a boundary acoustic fence, but often needs to work at closer range and higher intensity than typical garden noise.
Ventilation for the plant itself has to be designed alongside the screen, since an enclosure that traps heat or restricts cooling airflow can create a bigger problem than the noise it's addressing.
Terraced housing and rear access
Victorian and Edwardian terraces were rarely built with side access, which means materials for a rear garden fence often have to go through the house, over a shared side return, or down a narrow rear alley shared with several other properties.
That access constraint changes the practical choice of materials — full concrete gravel boards and long panels are harder to move through a narrow hallway than shorter timber sections carried in and built up on site.
It's also why timing matters on these jobs: a delivery that blocks a shared alley for half a day needs agreeing with neighbours in advance, not discovering on the morning of the job.
Restrictive covenants on newer estates
Many post-war and modern estates carry restrictive covenants in the original transfer deeds that go beyond planning law, commonly limiting fence height, requiring a specific style, or banning solid boundary treatments on front gardens entirely to preserve open-plan sightlines.
These covenants are a private legal matter between landowner and the estate's management company or original developer, so full planning permission being unnecessary doesn't mean the fence is automatically allowed.
Breach of covenant is usually enforced by a neighbour, resident's association or management company rather than the council, and can result in a requirement to remove the work at the owner's cost, so checking the title register for covenants before ordering is worthwhile on any estate build.
What a site survey covers
A proper site survey checks the boundary line against the deed plan where available, probes ground conditions at a few points along the run, and confirms access for both delivery vehicles and hand-carried materials.
It should also flag anything that changes cost before it becomes a surprise later — buried services, a shared boundary needing neighbour agreement, overhead cables limiting how tall equipment can be used, or a slope needing a stepped rather than level run.
A survey that skips any of these and goes straight to a headline price is the most common reason a quote changes significantly once work actually starts.
Colour and finish effects on a solid acoustic face
A dark-finished solid acoustic panel absorbs more heat from direct sun than a lighter finish, which can accelerate timber movement and drying out on a south-facing run.
This is a durability consideration rather than an acoustic one, but it affects how often joints need checking on an exposed, sun-facing acoustic boundary.
Checking compressible seals for lost resilience
A compressible foam or rubber seal used at panel joints loses some of its resilience over years of repeated compression and UV exposure, eventually failing to close the gap as effectively as when it was new.
Periodic replacement of these seals, rather than assuming they'll last the life of the panel, keeps the joint performing as intended rather than allowing a slow, easily missed decline in the run's overall sealing.
Dropped kerbs and boundary gate positions
A dropped kerb is authorised for a specific width and position, and a gate or fence opening that doesn't line up with it can create a technically unauthorised vehicle crossing over the footway.
Where a driveway gate is being repositioned or widened, it's worth checking whether the dropped kerb needs to be extended or moved to match, which is a separate application to the council's highways department.
Parking a vehicle over a kerb that hasn't been properly dropped, even briefly during works, can also draw attention from the local authority in some areas.
Who owns which boundary
Boundary ownership in England isn't settled by which side the posts face — it's set by the title deeds, and where the deeds are silent the presumption (a T-mark on old Ordnance Survey-derived plans, or the 'ad medium filum' rule for some hedges) only gets you so far.
Before any post goes in we ask to see the deed plan, or at minimum agree the line and height with the neighbour in writing, because replacing a fence in the wrong place is a genuinely common and avoidable dispute.
Where ownership is contested we'll fit on the client's own side of the line rather than guess, even if that means a slightly narrower run.
Hit-and-miss fencing for windy plots
Hit-and-miss fencing alternates boards on either side of the rails so each gap on one face is covered by a board on the other, giving privacy from both sides while leaving narrow gaps through the panel itself.
Those gaps let a proportion of wind pass through rather than loading the whole panel face, which is why it's a common recommendation on exposed boundaries where a solid closeboard run would need heavier posts and shorter bays.
It uses more timber than a single-skin boarded fence for the same run length, so it's priced accordingly, but the reduced wind load can offset that in post and repair costs over time.
Using packers to correct a slightly out-of-true panel fit
A small gap between a panel edge and a post face, caused by a minor inconsistency in post spacing rather than a genuine error, can often be taken up with a thin timber packer rather than re-digging and resetting the post.
Packers need fixing securely rather than simply wedged in, since a loose packer left to rattle under wind load will eventually work its way out and leave the original gap again.
Repeated packing along a run is a sign the underlying setting-out was slightly off rather than a one-off issue, and it's worth checking overall spacing again if more than an occasional panel needs correcting this way.
Helical pile foundations for a commercial security run
A helical pile is screwed into the ground using hydraulic or mechanical torque rather than being set in an excavated and concreted hole, giving a foundation that can be installed quickly on a site where digging is disruptive or where ground conditions are variable along the run.
Load capacity is checked by torque readings taken during installation rather than assumed from a standard depth, which makes helical piling useful on a site where soil type changes noticeably across the length of the boundary.
