Board orientation and grain direction
A board fixed with its bark side facing outward tends to cup away from the fixings as it dries, since the outer growth rings shrink tangentially more than the inner ones, pulling the board's edges outward.
Orienting the bark side inward on a fence board means any cupping pulls the edges toward the fixing rather than away from it, which keeps the board flatter and the fixings under less repeated strain.
This detail is easy to overlook when boards are cut from mixed stock without checking growth ring orientation, but it becomes visible within a season or two as boards from the same batch cup in opposite directions.
Ventilation requirements under a deck
A low-level deck with boxed-in sides and no airflow underneath traps moisture against the joists and the underside of the boards, which is one of the most common causes of premature timber rot on an otherwise well-built deck.
Leaving gaps in the skirting, or fitting purpose-made ventilation grilles, allows air to circulate beneath the structure and lets the timber dry out between wet periods rather than staying permanently damp.
Decks built very close to ground level with minimal void beneath them are particularly at risk and sometimes need a raised design specifically to allow enough clearance for airflow.
Trellis toppers and wind load
A trellis topper adds height to an existing or new fence — commonly for climbing plants or extra privacy — and because it's open lattice rather than solid boarding it adds relatively little wind load for the height gained.
That's useful on boundaries close to the 2m permitted development limit, where a solid panel extension would push both height and wind loading up together, but it only works if the topper is genuinely open lattice rather than a solid infill dressed up as trellis.
Fixing a topper to an old or undersized post rather than the fence itself is the most common reason toppers come loose, since the extra leverage at height needs a post that was sized for it from the start.
Trellis toppers and additional wind load
Adding a trellis topper to increase privacy height also increases the wind load a fence has to carry, since even open lattice trellis catches more air than its slim appearance suggests, especially once climbing plants fill in the gaps.
Posts sized correctly for a 1.8m panel don't automatically have the reserve strength for panel-plus-trellis at 2.1m or more, particularly on an exposed run.
Where a taller finished height is wanted, it's worth specifying posts for the full combined height from the outset rather than treating the trellis as a lightweight afterthought bolted to the top.
Ground conditions under a heavier acoustic run
Clay ground that swells and shrinks seasonally puts extra strain on a heavier double-skin panel, so base depth is increased rather than kept at a standard lap-panel spec.
Where ground has been disturbed by previous building work, we test rather than assume, since rubble or made ground close to the surface changes how a base actually needs to be built.
Picket profiles and spacing
Picket fencing is defined as much by the top profile of each paling — pointed, rounded, flat or 'gothic' — as by the gap between them, and both are usually specified rather than left to whatever the yard has in stock.
A tighter spacing, close to the paling's own width, gives a more solid boundary marker and better contains small pets; a wider spacing is more open and traditionally cottage-garden in character but does less to define a boundary.
Picket is a low-privacy, low-height fence by design, generally under a metre, and isn't a substitute for a taller closeboard or panel run where genuine screening is the aim.
Replacing a fence on the same line as before
Replacing a fence exactly where the old one stood is generally the lowest-risk approach from a boundary perspective, since it maintains a position both neighbours have already implicitly accepted for years.
It's still worth flagging the planned replacement to a neighbour beforehand, particularly if the new fence will be a different height, material or style to what's there now.
Where the old fence's exact line is unclear because it has leant or shifted over time, marking out the intended new line and briefly confirming it with the neighbour avoids later disagreement.
Party wall notices for an acoustic boundary wall
Where an acoustic barrier is built as a masonry wall rather than a timber fence, and it sits on or near the boundary line, the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 can apply in a way it wouldn't for a standard timber fence.
Checking whether a notice is needed before work starts avoids a dispute part-way through a build, particularly since a masonry wall's foundations often extend closer to a neighbour's ground than a timber post ever would.
How we measure and quote a job
A proper quote starts with a site visit rather than a phone estimate — measuring the actual run length, checking ground conditions with a probe or short trial dig, and confirming access before any numbers go on paper.
That's the only reliable way to catch the things that change a price: buried obstructions, a slope that needs stepping, a shared boundary that needs the neighbour's agreement, or a gate opening that's slightly out of square.
A written quote following that visit should specify post spacing, post and panel material, base type and any extras like gravel boards or capping, so there's nothing to renegotiate once the job starts.
Choosing between timber, concrete and steel posts
Timber posts are the cheapest and easiest to work with but are the first part of a fence to rot, particularly at ground level where they sit in permanently damp soil or concrete.
Concrete slotted posts cost more upfront and are harder to cut or adjust on site, but don't rot and hold panels rigidly without needing separate fixings, which suits a long, exposed or heavily-used run.
Steel posts, either box section or RSJ, are mostly reserved for commercial, security or very heavy-load applications where timber or concrete wouldn't cope with the weight or vandal-resistance required.
Rising damp at the gravel board
A timber gravel board sitting flush against damp soil draws moisture upward by capillary action in the same way a wall can suffer rising damp, and it is usually the first component to fail on an otherwise sound fence.
Concrete gravel boards avoid this entirely and are now the standard base for that reason, but where timber boards are kept for appearance, setting them a few millimetres proud of finished ground level makes a real difference.
Backfilling right up against a timber board with topsoil or mulch defeats the point, since it holds moisture directly against the face that most needs to stay dry.
