Closeboard steps cleanly in gravel-board increments and is our default above a 300mm fall across a bay. Feather-edge can be racked — angled between posts without a visible stagger — where the slope is gentle enough not to need a step.

Where retaining comes before fencing
On steeper sites the fence isn't the first job — a proper retaining wall or sleeper course is. We'll say so upfront rather than fitting a fence that's fighting a slope it was never built to hold back.
Drainage behind the low end
Every stepped or retained run needs somewhere for water to go. Undrained ground behind a sleeper retainer pushes the fence out within two seasons — we build drainage into the spec, not as an afterthought.

Should a fence follow the slope or step down it?
Step, in almost every case beyond a shallow fall — a racked fence on a real slope drops one end and rots at the sunken corner.
Do I need retaining sleepers before the fence?
On a genuine drop, yes — a fence isn't a retaining wall, and asking it to hold back banked soil is how it ends up leaning within a year or two.
Is panel fencing ever OK on a slope?
Rarely beyond a very shallow fall. Panels are built as rigid units and don't step cleanly, so closeboard or feather-edge is almost always the better answer.
What's the biggest drop you can span in one bay?
It depends on the ground and the post spec, but we'll tell you honestly on the site visit rather than guessing from a description.
How do you keep water off the low end of a stepped run?
